Richard appears to have money so why the cheap hotel room?

Richard owns a luxury car and has money, so why did he rent such a cheap room at the Grand Hotel? He could also have bought a change of clothes while in 1912. As for the room, I can understand that if the place was fully booked but it was never mentioned.

Probably he had some kind of Deja Vu.
Noticed he was getting past the hotel, but he stopped? Then rolled back and 'then' moved to the hotel?

I don't know what that other reply has to do with this question, but I'll say that the scene showing him purchasing "1912 money" and a few other scenes where he takes out and looks at his coinage indicate that he only has really a few coins with him. Not very much to go on, even by 1912 standards.

Even if I was a millionaire, I wouldn't pay to fly first class on a domestic flight.
Probably the same principle here.

How you can make the world a better place:
Don't shop at Wal-Mart.

reply

I don't think that hotel has any cheap rooms.

reply

Probably not...but Elise's room is much nicer than the one he starts out with.

reply

Maybe because he didn't have much money in 1912 currency?

reply

He had to buy the proper old currency. I'm sure he only took along what he thought he'd need. Not his whole fortune.

A Fiat Spider is far from a luxury car. I had one. Fun car, but inexpensive and a bag of loose bolts.

reply

Yeah, a lot of '60s sports cars were like that. Stylish, but tinny rattletraps.

In the book, it was the Hotel Del Coronado near San Diego, California. The hotel in the movie was elsewhere, but of the same type. The Hotel Del has small rooms, but it has no cheap rooms, and never did.
