What am I missing here?

I hadn't seen this since I was a kid, and I remembered being kinda indifferent towards it but figured I should give it another shot. So I checked it out again recently, and the print looked way better, no doubt about that. Other than that I wasn't hugely impressed.

I just can't seem to understand what makes this movie so loved by the horror community? I feel like there's just something I'm not getting, can anyone help me out here? The characters were one dimensional and not interesting, the dialogue is mediocre, the acting subpar, the pacing is all over the place, and really the only thing I can say I enjoyed was the Tall Man and the effects. But the other 90% of the movie is standard late 70s/early 80s horror that you can find on any vhs in any thrift shop.

Like I said the movie is beloved, and the reviews are great. So I can only surmise that's it me, the viewer, not getting something. Can someone shed some light on it so when I give it another shot I can see what I've been missing? I want to enjoy it like everyone else but I just can't seem to get into it.

Can you name a horror movie (or any movie) that's similar?

No human being with a soul didn't love this movie when they were a kid. Confirmed you're probably an alien or robot, or else just some soulless jerk.

I was there, in HS at the time, went to the mall to rewatch this with my friends a few times we loved it so much! Seems like a key component of analysis is lacking in the responses here though.
I could go on about a few reasons why, but to be honest there probably wasn’t a teenager that saw it on its original run that wasn’t really really drunk, stoned, or both!
Funny how that can make a movie seem a lot better and just hilarious lol

This thing always stuck with me and was buried in the back of my mind, especially that image of the ball flying around, but I assumed I was the only one who remembered it.
Pretty shocking to discover it has a bit of a following!

The other one from around that time that doesn’t hold up well but was a ‘trip’ at the time is
“Phantom of the Paradise.”
Anyone here who likes Phantasm should give it a shot. Vey different but the same 70’s vibe.

Also look up The Final Girls from just recently.

Oh, and One Cut of the Dead a Japanese zombie movie/comedy with a twist. Go in cold and don’t give up on it! (I said it’s got a twist!)

It's awesome.. You're not missing anything.. Smoke a little weed when you watch it.. You'll appreciate it so much better.. This & PHANTASM II were the only 2 movies that mattered.. The rest truly were straight to DVD
