Did you understand that they were on an Island?

I first saw this when I was 9 and for the most part I thought they were living on the east coast. I really didn't understand that they went across a ferry to get to the island and the island beaches. I know, kinda stupid since they lived on Amity Island, I was just a rube from the midwest.

I wonder if this was a little confusing to more than a few people?

It's only an island if you look at it from the water.

Yes because I used to go to Martha’s Vineyard and it was well known that Jaws was shot there. Brody and his wife talk about their move to the island, how Brody is a true “mainlander”. Then there’s the scene where the big ferry arrives with all the tourists.

This is the first time I hear of it but I dont see how it makes a difference.

Correct , it makes no difference.

There are ferries connecting bits of land that arnt islands
and islands that have bridges to them are effectively not islands ...

when they are talking on that little car ferry i never considered hey were going to or from the mainland - just across some inlet

I think it was quite clear it was an island. There was the following dialogue between Brody and Hooper:

Brody: It doesn't make any sense when you pay a guy like you to watch sharks.
Hooper: Well, uh, it doesn't make much sense for a guy who hates the water to live on an island either.
Brody: It's only an island if you look at it from the water.
Hooper: That makes a lot of sense.
