Kotter didn’t help these students much

Did any of them get anything out of that class? What was he even teaching them? None of them looked destined for college or trade school. Once their tiny Sweatballs club was over, they’d be sweating it out in the welfare lines.

Disagree Barbarino got a job working in the hospital. Obviously he learned something---since he was able to keep it.

reply

What about the others? Wasn’t one hiding his genius just to stay in that class?

reply

depends. Somebody can be really smart one area and need help in another. I was in a remedial class during elementary which was 'similar' to this where everybody was together regardless of disability/subject. I was in my 'regular' room for the subjects which I did not need services in.

reply

I suppose keeping them in class and off the streets was a start. He also seemed to be a bit of a father figure outside class so more of a counselor/advocate than instructor - at least from what could be seen on the show. Of course, scenes featuring actual instruction would be boring.

reply

What did Kotter teach? Did they ever show even a glimpse of actual instruction?

reply

It’s been 40 years since I watched the show but I’m guessing it was homeroom or some sort of remedial instruction.

reply

Yep
