Horrible

This movie sucks!!! It wasn't scary at all, in fact, it was laughable. Just plain stupid. I will never rent it again. I can't believe you people think this piece of crap is scary and good. It's neither.

Awww, see the little troll. Isn't it cute?

Windmills do not work that way!

reply

Eh, maybe they are just stupid and really didn't like it. Not all people are trolls, some are just unintelligent.

reply

Good point.

I dont know what you were expecting but for a t.v movie made in 1972, it was incredible. Look beyond the absence of gore and pay attention to the character details. Flawless portrayals and a great pace make this one of the greatest t.v stories of all time. I think what also makes this great is the said portrayals actually make you believe this sort of thing could happen.

reply

So you believe in vampires now?

reply

I don't think he's a troll, necessarily. Probably some callow youth with the attention span of a cocker spaniel and an atrophied imagination.

I'm in my 30s and just caught this on YouTube. I thought it was pretty funny too. Every fight seen with the vampire had me laughing. That alone would have me disagree with the OP; it was too funny to be horrible.

reply

Well, there are also a lot of nuances that our OP friend wouldn't appreciate. It would help if he had lived through or at least understood the cultural milieu of the mid-'70s.

A theme that runs through both movies and the series is that the authorities care more about their image and position than about protecting the public -- or at least, too much to risk looking silly by accepting Kolchak's outlandish claims that happen to be true.

As soon as Kolchak saves their bacon, it's politics as usual. He saves countless lives, but will never be famous, never by rewarded; probably never even be thanked. During the course of the series, he gradually stops even trying to get the authorities interested, and just takes care of business himself.

(To be fair, in this movie, he is a pretty damned annoying jackass from the point of view of the police.)

These fight scenes were not played for comedy so anyone who would find them funny has either become desensitized to violence so that they do not react to it as they should. Or people around them have never required that they act in the proper way when an act of violence is done seriously, which would be to not view it as funny.

The stunt double for the vampire was too obvious. And in the hospital, the vampire throws around one of the male nurses to the ground. Then turns the corner and throws the same male nurse out the window. I hate plot holes

I smell , I smell ummm .....Troll !!!!

Go back to your Twilight pablum, child!

The OP is probably 16 and raised on Twilight and True Blood. For the 70s, and for TV, it was damn good!

It really was great stuff. That’s the thing most folks miss I think: If it’s true horror you’re looking for you might try 2 aisles over behind the frozen peas. “The Night Stalker” is for my nickel a vampire spoof totally filled and reeking of cheese – good English cheddar, I’d say. It’s silly indeed – but it’s supposed to be, isn’t it? I really need to watch it again – along with “The Night Strangler!” 

Probably you have become desensitized to violence so that it doesn't affect you as it should. Try putting yourself in the character's shoes, particularly the victims. Maybe that will help you find it at least a little scary.

Perhaps that's true. But there's one more thing that's equally true: Both this film and its successor The Night Strangler were made-for-television in the early 1970s.

Consider this, for example: This is a vampire movie, but how much blood is actually visible? On the victims not much at all. Hell, the most blood you or anyone else will see depicted in the film at any given moment is in bottles, isn't it?

reply

Sure...it was TV in the 1970's. You were not going to see spurting blood and ripped out throats.....

So some folks find the scene with the police (and Kolchak) discovering the young woman's body in the quarry (or whatever), with no footprints around it, implying her body was thrown from a great distance....funny?

Hmm...I'm struggling to perceive the humor in that scene.

My god its one of the best tv movies ever made ! infact its to good for telly ! wonderful film !

It was scary enough for me when I was a kid! My mom too. When Skorzeny swings open the closet door where Kolchak is hiding, I think my mom almost hit the ceiling.

I've noticed something in the film after being inundated with more than a decade of those legal "procedural" shows. C.S.I and all those cop shows can't wait to show you the body on the autopsy table, sometimes with the chest opened, etc. Gag, who needs to see that?

In the opener of The Night Stalker, the audience's POV is looking up at the physicians looking down. We don't get to see the body. We just have to imagine it. That's scarier than seeing an opened up body on the table.

reply

It's scary for youngsters. Although family acceptable with it's PG rating. I reckon that it's one of the best TV movies ever made. I've rated it 8/10. The vampire's red eyes are impressive.
