Is the original the best Dirty Harry movie?

I think so. While the others have some great scenes, I think the original Dirty Harry is still the most gritty. It has the best villain anyway. What do you guys think?

I think I enjoy Magnum Force just a tad better. :)

I too like Magnum Force the best, with Dirty Harry second. The Enforcer is third best and I still think that one is not near as bad as people say.

Yes, and in my opinion it's the only truly great film in the series.

That's great, I'm gonna start using that!

Anyway, the first film is inarguably the best, but the sequels are worthy of a watch as well. People seem to rank them very differently. For instance I love SUDDEN IMPACT the least while a lot of people think it's the best one next to DIRTY HARRY.

Dirty Harry: 7/10.
All the sequels: 5/10.

I like Callahan as a "tough cop" character, but the sequels are disappointing overall - none of them comes close to matching the original. Although my favorite individual scene in the whole series is probably the diner hold-up in Sudden Impact ("Smith & Wesson ... and me"). I found Magnum Force, The Enforcer, and The Dead Pool difficult to remember once they were over.

I think the original is certainly the best because it's the grittiest and most hard-hitting film in the entire series.

Yes. This is the best.

"Dirty Harry" is by far the best. I think Andrew Robinson's portrayal of "Scorpio" was truly outstanding (any actor who can make you hate him is doing a superb acting job). Unlike many other actors, Eastwood and Robinson were both very believable in their roles.

I saw #s 2 & 3. They were such a turn-off I didn't bother with the rest.

Yes, Andy Robinson´s Scorpio is a huge reason why Dirty Harry is way better than any of the sequels - the villains in the subsequent entries are completely bland and forgettable in comparison. Dirty Harry is also by far the best shot film and has a cooler, somewhat edgy attitude (even if it means kind of an half-assed condoning of vigilante justice) than any of the other films.

No. 1 is easily the best. It actually has a point to make about police procedures vs. getting results. It's fairly right-wing but I think even liberals can't argue with the points it makes.

The sequels are just a continuation of the same theme about a cop who breaks rules, goes outside the system but gets results etc... The only problem is that with each addition to the series, the themes become more and more watered down.

The Dirty Harry series is fairly solid as a whole - but the films definitely get weaker.

The Dead Pool was laughable in comparison to the outstanding original.

Hands down, all the other sequels became too unrealistic and even campy....I read the the execs were actually looking for a 8 3/8" barreled M29 for the first movie....but, the gun was so scarce, the studio settled on a 6 1/2"...if the longer barrel had made the big screen...it would have made the made the original movie even more awesome, no doubt. I read later they actually used a S&W .45 instead of the magnum because the ammo was so expensive....but do not know if that was just lore

reply

According to IMFDb:
The handguns used in the movie were two Model 29s, one with a 6 1/2" barrel and one with an 8 3/8" barrel.

As for the ammo, special blanks were manufactured because the standard types wouldn't fit.

Also, the story was that a Model 57 was used instead of a Model 29. The Model 57 is based on the same frame and is practically identical to the Model 29 but is chambered for .41 Magnum rounds. However, a closeup shows "44 Magnum" on the side of the barrel.

The original "Dirty Harry" was definitley the best of all Dirty Harry movies. Those coming later just didn't hold up.

Also can anyone imagine little Frank Sinatra playing Harry? Gives me the heaves just thinking about it. Clint Eastwood IS Dirty Harry !

After Sinatra, there were three others before Eastwood.

From the trivia section: After Sinatra dropped out, Warner Bros. considered Marlon Brando for the role, but never officially approached him. Next, they offered it to Steve McQueen and then Paul Newman, both of whom turned it down. Newman however suggested Clint Eastwood as a possible star.

Thanks to Paul Newman! And he did another "inspired casting" suggestion for a seventies movie.

From the trivia section of The Man Who Would Be King (1975): John Huston tried to launch the film version of "The Man Who Would Be King" many times before completing it. It was originally conceived as a vehicle for Clark Gable and Humphrey Bogart in the fifties, and later as a vehicle for Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas. When it was considered as a vehicle for Robert Redford and Paul Newman, Newman suggested Sean Connery and Michael Caine.

Newman had good instincts. And so did Jack Lemmon for Paul Newman.

From the trivia section of Cool Hand Luke (1967): According to Jack Lemmon's son, Chris, in an Icons Radio Interview Lemmon was originally selected to play the part of Luke, but Lemmon, reading the script, saw that Paul Newman would be better. So Lemmon decided to produce it.

Paul Newman was so cool for SO MANY reasons. Handsome and cool AS HELL. An outstanding underplaying actor. Tremendously likable. Paul Newman is a Movie Star on the order of MM, Cary Grant, Marlon Brando, Yul Brynner, Sophia Loren, Clint Eastwood. We don’t have a Paul Newman or anyone like these other stars today. Please correct me if you think I am wrong.

I hope that I am.

Yes. It's easily the best, a 5 star film.

I have never seen the sequels though the first one is outstanding, I would give it a 9.5/10 I would give it 10/10 but I just can't for some reason... As good as it is it does slow down at times...

Despite our sense of "the Dirty Harry series," there is only ONE true classic among them:

The original.

I see this happening with two other classics that got sequels:

Psycho (1960)
Jaws (1975.)

The reason: the originals were each made by a master filmmaker: Hitchcock, Spielberg...Don Siegel. (Yes, Clint Eastwood directed one of the Harry sequels, but not when he was at his best, and the other three sequels were done by journeymen.)

A classic movie -- particularly a BLOCKBUSTER classic movie (Dirty Harry, Psycho, and Jaws all were) is a very rare thing for Hollywood to bring forth. Unique. "Once in a lifetime" stories.

Those movies pulled it off -- but the sequels had none of the craft, "respect" or impact of the originals. Spielberg had no control over the Jaws sequels and they infuriated him so much that he "locked up" sequel rights for all of his later films (like Indy Jones and Jurassic Park -- Spielberg directed some of their sequels himself.)

Good sequels are few and far between -- Godfather II, Aliens, what else?
