Why did Betty just up and leave her sister behind?

When Betty thought Bob was going to degrade the General, she simply left. She never did talk to her sister at all about leaving or even why she was mad in the first place. If she had simply told Judy her concerns, Judy would have gotten to the bottom of it all and the entire mess would have been avoided. Instead, she just leaves her sister behind and goes solo.

Well Betty thought Judy was happily engaged to Phil so she decided to leave. She was broken hearted when she thought Bob was being self serving but didn't want to ruin her sisters happiness

It also could have been resolved if she had just realized it was heresay that she was going by, a busybody woman who overheard something and she couldn't possibly have been mistaken even though she says to her something about Bob wouldn't do that and alluded misunderstanding but instead of going directly to the source and asking him she just believes what someone else told her. THat just goes to show you always go to the source to confirm things.

The last 45 minutes or so is frustrating, because Betty pulls the stereotypical female "I'm mad at you so I'm going to give you the cold shoulder instead of telling you why I'm mad at you" crap. Just tell him why you're pissed, and you'll clear the whole thing up quickly. Of course, then the movie would have ended after about an hour.

reply

You're all absolutely right but if she had just walked up to Judy and said 'What's all this about the TV then sis' it would have been resolved 45 minutes earlier and been a very short film. It's mild peril ! Bing's relationship with the lovely Rosemary Clooney is in jeopardy but not to the extent where you don't think it will be alright in the end.Yes we'd all have confronted people and Emma would have got the sack but who wants a one hour film ?

reply

She overexaggerated way too much. She acted like Bing was about to diss her own father. So upset and she told nobody why! Rather unreasonable.

reply

Betty was an uptight bitch who jumped to conclusions without trying to communicate with anybody first.

To me, what doesn’t make sense is that she would leave the show in a lurch like that.

Two reasons: Judy was newly engaged which would mean (for those times) she'd likely leave show business and raise a family - Judy would have to continue as a solo in any case, and that she was given bad intel by Emma regarding Bob's plan for the show.

OK, three reasons - it was a needed plot device even if Betty grossly over-reacted and could have clarified what she heard from Emma.

You know I mean “Playing Around,” right? They have been rehearsing for days fitting Betty in to multiple, complicated numbers.

Now I’m realizing it could’ve been kind of funny to have Miss Lenz be her understudy, only to be disappointed again.

Yeah, but Playing Around was already a Broadway show ready to go when Bob took it to Vermont. They made some changes to include the Haynes Sisters act, so even if Judy left, the show would go on without an issue, but I agree it was odd that Judy would just up and leave a few days before the show. Plot device..

Yeah, I guess we all feel bad for Doris, and if you asked her, the feeling would be mutual I'm sure.
