why didn't they make a serious movie ?

could have done so much with that cast.

Bogart self-produced it and probably wanted to see if he could do something other than the usual, to push into new areas of filmmaking. It was a bold attempt that deserves admiration.

I thought it was a mess

Know what you mean, but strangely, if you watch it repeatedly it starts growing on you.

reply

Uh, because they wanted to make a comedy?

A damn good one, too.

reply

I didn't like it.

reply

I loved it!

So do many others, and The Critics.

reply

Why not, indeed? I'm wondering why they didn't do a comedy.

I enjoyed the movie, quite a bit, and I think it's good, light-hearted fun, but it's hardly what I'd call a comedy. It has some good comic moments, but it's more of a "light drama".

reply

I like the campy movie we got. It can be a real hoot.

reply

Yeah, really. My Dad loves this movie and told me I had to watch it with him. I really had trouble staying awake - which is rare for a Bogart movie. If I could sit through Passage To Marseilles this one should not have been so sleep-inducing. But, I think back then this was the Oceans 11 of its day and people wanted to see it just for the stars.
