There wasn't even a DETOUR in the film

Sure there was. In fact, there are several. Think about it. Al wants to get to California to be with his girlfriend and never actually gets there thanks to the detours he makes along the way starting with stealing someone else's identity. And things only get more and more off the intended track (getting to California to be with his girlfriend) as it goes on...which is essentially what a detour is: an unexpected change of direction from your expected path.
