Yeah, definitely.

Said in a French Open thread below that he should really have one more and Nadal one less, given the Australian Open 2022 farce, which would put him four slams clear.

But regardless he's still well clear now and has won three out of four on offer this year.

Always considered Federer to be the ultimate professional we'd ever see but Djokovic has surpassed him now.

reply

Ridiculous. Nadal has missed several slams with injury, even got injured at A014 in the final when he was 12-0 H2H against Wawrinka and subsequently lost. If anything Nadal should have at least 3-4 more slams. Also, its Novak's own fault for deciding not to vaccinate.

reply

Ridiculous? Not being able to compete in an event through injury is a completely different thing from being blocked as a result of an external political force!

Of course players will get injured at various points in their careers and miss out but the fact is that in January 2022 both Nadal and Djokovic were fit and ready to play in Australia. This effectively means Djokovic should have one slam more and Nadal one slam less.

reply

No it doesn't. Novak, knew what the rules were. There was a risk he wouldn't be able to play. I disagree with him being banned from entering Australia but to say he would have won is absurd. Medvedev straight setted him at USO in 21, so it would have been a tricky final for Novak assuming he would have gotten there.

reply

Novak, knew what the rules were. There was a risk he wouldn't be able to play...

Nonsense. He only knew there was a risk he wouldn't be able to play AFTER he had been detained upon arrival in Australia. And he only went to Australian in the first place having fulfilled "the rules" and been granted a valid visa...

Djokovic won the three preceding Australian open titles consecutively (including straight setting Medvedev the previous year!) and again the following year, so it's a far cry from "absurd" to assume he would have won in '21 as well.

However, I'm glad you at least conceded that Nadal wouldn't have been in that final...

reply

Nope there was always a risk he wouldn't be able to play. The exemption rule was never a guarantee to enter the country, so yes being unvaccinated was always a risk. I meant in a hypothetical Djoko v Med situ. Lol at conceding Nadal wouldn't have been in the final. You must really dislike Nadal! I didn't look up the hypothetical scenarios of a draw where Djokovic would have played, not that desperate to "win" the argument tbh.
All I know, is that Nadal won and crying over what might have been makes you look like a sore loser fanboy.

reply

I'm not particularly a fan of Djokovic nor not a fan of Nadal. Just pointing out the obvious that given Djokovic's incredible record in Australia and his form, at that time and since, it's about as strong a likelihood as you could get that he would have won.

I'm not sure why that would possibly equate in anyone's thinking as being anti Nadal. The scenario literally had nothing to do with him...

I'm not sure what you're talking about re "exemption rules" and no guarantee to enter the country?

The guy was given a legitimate entry visa by the Victoria State Government (which they were entitled to do) and he travelled to Australia on that basis.

Don't you remember what happened? He appealed against his illegal detention and won his case. The only reason he was thrown out was because of because of some minister subsequently exercising executive powers to have him kicked out!

The whole thing was political and snowballed AFTER he'd legitimately arrived in the country. Surely you can't really think he travelled there in the belief that there was a risk he wouldn't play?

reply

I don't deny he was booted for political reasons but there was always risk of upsetting some bureaucrat by not getting vaccinated.

reply

I've been a fan of Djokovic for a long time now. Never really a Federer or Nadal fan.

reply

He's certainly the GOAT of Grand Slams. And now, at the age of 36 he's on an incredible Grand Slam run. He's been in 8 out of the last 9 Grand Slam Finals he's participated in..and won 7 of them! If Novak would've played in the 22 Aussie and U.S. Open he probably have 9 out of 11!

As of today, 26 Sep 2023, 36 year old Novak Djokovic is ranked the #1 tennis player in the world.

reply

His name will always have to have an asterisk with the tournaments he could have won if he had not been banned.

GOAT+

reply

Nonsense.

While I like Djokovic I think the kind of fan boy fever I often see needs to be toned down a bit.

There should, however, be an asterisk next to his name that he choked when he could have been the first player to win a calendar Grand Slam in what seems like 100 years.

Point being: There's never a guarantee that a player "would have won if they played."

Ask Medvedev.

reply

For what it's worth, Sampras is my favourite player, but if you deny a guy a chance to play, you robbed him of a chance to win.

Djokovic has proven he can win today and that means, he had a chance of winning yesterday.
