So was Jesus born in Bethlehem or Nazareth ?

It can't have been both.

Bethlehem.

Yes even though Mary was living in Nazareth Joseph had to go back to Bethlehem to be counted for a census that never actually happened. So that's how Jesus ended up being born in Bethlehem. Or Luke could have invented the story so that Jesus could be made to fit the prophecy that the Messiah as a descendant of David would be born in Bethlehem.

Or Mary made up the story so everyone didn't know what a skanky ho she was.
