I heard a rumor that walking out on that Vanity Fair photoshoot with Scarlett Johannson and Keira Knightley hurt her career.

It would explain why she never got as big as people thought she would after the one-two punch of "Mean Girls" and "The Notebook."

Maybe, but since walking out on that she's starred in The Time Traveller's Wife, Sherlock Holmes, Midnight in Paris, About Time, and two Doctor Strange movies. If it hurt her career, it wasn't enough to keep her out of cool indie flicks, fun rom-coms, and Marvel's juggernaut (the movie franchise, not the X-Men villain), plus blockbusters like Sherlock Holmes. So, maybe it hurt her a bit, but not a tonne. She's not a household name for most people, but that's such a rare thing it might not be the photoshoot.

Her wiki page says that she took a step back for awhile post-photoshoot, and turned down roles (including one in Casino Royale). It's possible that turning down high-profile roles got her off of some call-lists for agents (?) Don't know which role she turned down, but it seems like the only one she'd fit would be Vesper. Eva Green was fantastic, but I think McAdams could have done it well.

Also, she seems to get steady work playing romantic leads opposite time benders. So she's found a niche, anyway.
