his career trajectory now

Feels a little reminiscent of the guys who ran Game of Thrones. It got so big, they were so excited, got offered a bite too big to chew (with Star Wars in their case), then crapped on it and ruined it for themselves simply by doing too much and shooting their own franchise on the way out the door.

I shouldn't think there are many people right now in Hollywood whose next moves will be more closely scrutinised than Gunn's and Safran's.

He had to know what the DC fanboys were like, before he took the job.

Looks like he is just rebooting everything to make the Gunnverse which will be lots of repetitive humor and dildo jokes. I liked the first Guardians and was pleasantly surprised by Peacemaker. I guess I don't want to say he is overrated as people seem to enjoy his stuff, but I find that he lacks depth and is only able to portray one style and tone, which can lead to some good stuff as noted above, however it becomes boring and not entertaining real fast in my opinion.

That's somewhat fair. You can definitely feel the vibe of watching one of his movies, one might call him an auteur if his stuff were more serious. But the Guardians movies definitely feel like quintessential Marvel, and he did The Suicide Squad, so he's transcended that bridge, and we all know DC desperately wishes they could be Marvel, at least in terms of coherent and connected storytelling.
