Did she live up to her potential

I look at her C.V and some of the film's she's been in on the Hollywood side of things haven't been that bad. She continues to get work which is always a good sign for any actress. So her career hasn't been bad but maybe it's just me but has she really lived up to her true potential.

Her best work for me has been outside Hollywood, Somersault, the role that broke her through in 2004, Candy in 2006 with the late Heath Ledger and Bright Star in 2009. For me to see the best of Abbie, they are the first port of call. Looking at her performances in those films, she could have been the next Cate Blanchett or Naomi Watts. But it wasn't to be.

Looking at her work once she hit Hollywood, she's got some good films on her C.V . A Good Year (she's good in that), Three Billboards... (Oscar winning film, she's given little to do but is good when she is), Elizabeth The Golden Age and Seven Psychopaths (very good film, but she is badly misused in it). I know Sucker Punch has it's fans as much as it's haters. Stop Loss was the closet she got to lead role in a drama but that film didn't connect with the audience or the critics.

But she's got herself type cast, as the wife or girlfriend role. Geostorm, Limitless, Robocop and even some of her better roles I mentioned before she was the wife or girlfriend. Or just given lead roles when she gets them in meh films like Lavender or 6 days. Seems like Jack Ryan TV show is doing well for her.

So would you say she's lived up to her potential or just a case of a someone who didn't live up to the talent they have.

I thought she would have had a better career by now.

I thought so, too. I first saw her in A Good Year and thought she did well in that. I suppose sometimes it comes down to luck - being in the right place at the right time, or being available at the right time.

I just think she got into the groove of doing the money Jobs that she lost her way a little. As I also said I just see in her someone who sees acting as something to pay the bills and her true passions lay elsewhere. You find great films on her C.V and you find some very good performances dabbed here or there on her C.V. But I would put her in the top 10 of acting talent that didn't live up to their potential.

After you see her in Somersault, Candy and Bright Star, you get a sad tinge of what could have been with her. I get the vibe from her that acting is her Job that pays the bills and not her passion, maybe I'm too harsh on her. Maybe she wouldn't have reached the heights of fellow countrywomen like Nicole Kidman or Cate Blanchett but I was expecting a few more top notch roles on her C.V.

Was there an expectation for her to be the next Watts or even Blanchett?

reply

I don't think so , I mean she's good but nowhere near Blanchett level.

reply

She was expected to be the next in line for that level, seen how her career has played out I'm sure some will dismiss it and think that wouldn't be the case. But Cornish was a highly touted young actress for a few years. And i'm not knocking her on this, but I don't think she sees her career as seriously as Watts and Blanchett did.
