is this guy done for good?

It seems like his heyday as a cinematographer is pretty much over. Nolan seems to have chosen Hoyte van Hoytema as his right-hand man ever since Wally left to go shoot his own movie, and after that, Pfister has pretty much done nothing worth mentioning.

In all honesty, Wally strikes me as an average, run-of-the-mill DP who only ever shot anything worthwhile when Nolan was in charge. None of his other work (The Italian Job, Moneyball, Transcendance etc) had cinematography that could be classified as anything other than average. And even then, I wouldn't say any of his collaborations with Nolan were THAT stunning (Inception is the best-looking thing he's shot, IMO). If I had to guess, Nolan probably gave Wally a bunch of good ideas to work off of during their shoots, which in turn, brought the best of what the latter had to offer, unremarkable as it may be.

On top of that, the guy comes across as a bit of an asshole in real life. He comes off very smug and full of himself in interviews, like he thinks he knows cameras and lighting better than anyone else in the business. He has none of the humility or down-to-earth qualities someone like Roger Deakins possesses, for example.

So yeah, with the flop that was Transcendance under his belt, it seems at the very least, that his directorial career is done for. He can always make a comeback, of course, but it doesn't seem like he's particularly eager to at the moment, given the lack of work on his radar. The guy can just go on working as a bland, unremarkable DP under someone less talented than Nolan, but I suppose his ego just won't allow that. How sad.

He’s an asshole to work with and not a good enough director to justify it. Nolan has a better working relationship with Hoytema, too.

Nolan has everything shot in a clinical, clean-room style that is basically antiseptic. van Hoytema is simply doing the same thing Pfister was.

He's kaput. He'll never work again

He's no Stanley Kubrick or Akira Kurosawa, but his films do have generally good lighting and color grading that fits the mood of what he's trying to convey. I don't think his work with Hoytema has necessarily improved his craft all that much, but I do think Hoyte is a much better cinematographer as a whole.

Just look at his work on Her or Let the Right One In, for example. None of Pfister's work measures up to that level of quality, with or without Nolan.
