John Candy's death led to John Hughes leaving Hollywood

I read an article a few years ago where a girl had befriended John Hughes as a penpal and he told her how upset he was that John Candy died and he blamed the studios for working him so hard. For the most part he left Hollywood and didn't come back.

"John told me about why he left Hollywood just a few years earlier. He was terrified of the impact it was having on his sons; he was scared it was going to cause them to lose perspective on what was important and what happiness meant. And he told me a sad story about how, a big reason behind his decision to give it all up was that "they" (Hollywood) had "killed" his friend, John Candy, by greedily working him too hard."

That is really sad. :-(

I never heard of this

reply

Not sure about the validity of this...

Candy was morbidly obese and a heavy smoker. He was a truly great comedic actor, but if anyone "killed" Candy, it was Candy himself.

John Candy also may have been genetically predisposed to having a heart attack. His father, uncle, and even his brother all had heart attacks in their late 30s or early 40s. John's father in particular, was only 35 when he died. The men in John's family likely suffered from a disorder known as Familial hypercholesterolemia.

And it seems rather simplistic to assert that John Candy's death was Hughes's primary motivation for leaving Hollywood. What's far more likely:

The 90s was a very different decade than The 80s, one that wasn't as amenable to the sort of flicks JH traded in, and he either had a tough time or wasn't interested in adapting. That, and he may have been exhausted, after cranking out that many movies in rapid succession
