The Alan Shore of The Practice. The one of Boston Legal as flat as characters get -- a skirt-chasing lethario who was a hollow shell into which David Kelley could pour his soapbox speeches. The one of The Practice was unethical, but for the greater good -- sort of like the charming con man James Garner played so well in Maverick or The Rockford Files. It was a classic character type, and if Kelley were only capable of realizing he had a goldmine with that character and could resist turning people into hollow shells to spout his personal beliefs, he could have been an amazing, complex role that would have given Spader an opportunity to spread his wings and soar. But, at bottom, Spader is lazy, and Kelley is, too. By the end of Boston Legal, Alan Shore was spouting arguments that left out salient facts -- arguments phrased exactly as other characters in the firm spoke. Sad waste of talent by that point, on both their parts.

you are so right. Shore was great in The Practice even Denny was too then Kelly went off the deep end.

Some of the best television, ever -- on both their parts. The Alan Shore of Boston Legal not only looked different, but he was different. He was a completely different character. So was Denny Crane, for that matter.

At bottom, Kelley would rather pontificate than write good television. People are tired of being preached at.

I have to admitt I was surprised a bit, I knew Kelley was a lefty but some shows of the Practice could had been written by a conservative. In BL I guess he showed his true colors.
