For as popular as he was when he was alive, Steve McQueen has completely faded in popularity

Fade away?? You have actors who were famous two years ago that are not anymore. McQueen died in 1980. He was 50. You are talking about 43 years ago. To this day - internationally, he’s the guy. McQueen and Monroe. If you watch foreign movies - there is always a poster of him in somebody’s living room whether it’s Bullitt, The Great Escape, Papillon, Thomas Crown, The Getaway. Even Wanted, Dead or Alive TV show. Same with Monroe. Elizabeth Taylor was huge at the time, but I don’t think a lot of people even know about her today. Generally, the American actors most revered and respected are Brando, McQueen, DeNiro, Clift, James Dean. McQueen’s private life too is also noteworthy as he was one of the most charismatic, sexiest of men - women loved him and men admired him.

interesting question.

what other popular stars of his era are still popular?

Monroe (tho earlier), but I consider her the exception, not the rule.

Tho I would say he is iconic like Monroe but to a lesser degree.

That's just the nature of stardom. It's very fleeting. Today's star is tomorrow's historical footnote 9 times out of 10.

I think McQueen hasn't completely faded in popularity though. He still has a following, particularly among movie buffs or people who grew up in the 60s and 70s.

I think the word popularity is more descriptive than stardom.
As I've stated, I found him to be very one note.
And though that note is VERY popular now, the admiration of this type of character is what is fleeting.
The fast action, explosive movie genre has morphed into the cgi/DC market of today. Sacrificing story telling for visual stimulation.
I can't tell what the next popular genre will be, but judging by the lack of knowledge, morality, and reasoning in today's youth, I shudder to even imagine it.
