For me, it's Harry Caul from The Conversation.

Either 'Unforgiven' or 'The Conversation' or 'Eureka' (and possibly 'Superman - The Movie' (1978) .....just for getting the perfect balance between menace and comedy)

I really liked him in The Hunting Party, Prime Cut, The Package, Lucky Lady, and Target.

I loved his unhinged performance in Crimson Tide and his sympathetic performance in The Firm.

NOT MY FAVORITE FILM FEATURING HIM...BUT MY FAVORITE PERFORMANCE BY GENE HACKMAN WOULD BE HEARTBREAKERS.
