This the reason why imdb boards closed?

to stop users posting bad things LOL.

Maybe they knew this day was coming..

reply

Maybe partly..But really they hated the bad ratings and the bad reviews on new films as much as they hated the battering on celebrities.
There was a lot of negativity, in general, on the boards.
But it sure is difficult to get the same kind of info elsewhere on less popular films and actors. It was a treasure trove that has left a huge void.

reply

well .. we got this place..

reply

Yes...and so far I've much preferred it over all the alternatives suggested when they were closing.

reply

I prefer this place for the forums, especially since you can see what's trending.

As for info and trivia stuff, TV Tropes is actually a pretty fun way to break down works.

reply

They needed to moderate more aggressively and without bias. And they didn't believe it was worth the effort, so they closed it instead.

Negative comments are not a big deal. Its when you have openly hostile, aggressive troll like behavior that made some of the boards an irritating place to be.

reply

IMDb boards shut down because the whole libel/slander/defamation thing has become ridiculously litigious. Without even being a so-called troll, hater, etc. it is no longer acceptable to say anything critical about any public figure or business which might damage their career, negatively affect their bottom line and/or get their lawyers excited. Except of course now that he's crossed the line we can say pretty much anything about Kevin Spacey.

Sad but true?

Pretty difficult to file a libel and defamation suit against an anonymous person on a message board..

But there were some boards there that were somewhat crazy town..
I went to the George Clooney board when he got married simply because I didn't follow celebrity gossip boards and was curious as to who he had married....
There was all kinds of in depth posts there about how George and his new wife were agents for terrorists groups... and worse...and these not made idly but full fledged believers citing all kinds of supposed links to what they were both suppose to be involved in. Their marriage was a cover, it seemed..It consumed the board and was about nothing else. I'm sure I happened upon a few other boards like this but would back away.

The tone of these boards were nothing like the average troll on the average board of popular shows or movies. These were visceral foil hatters that seemed pretty light of a full load. And seemed too scary to even respond to.
Yet the mods never touched them and let them go their merry way for years.

I'm done with IMDB nowadays (they're not even that accurate a 'source' anymore, anyhow) and now they've essentially taken away the voice of the people (that made them what they are)

IMDB were getting paid lots of money to hype up movies (or stars) that no-one in reality actually likes (and beyond the paid for hyperbole......the message boards painted a completely different picture)

Nowadays IMDB are still paid huge ammounts of money to promote bad movies (and likewise actors) but us mere mortals can't say anything about them (however true)
So now, IMDB can continue their (frankly pathetic) "NO SMALL ROLES" or "THEN AND NOW" segments (in which they expect people to reminisce with heartfelt joy, the meaningless career-arcs of some veteran 14 year old brat actor) Or even worse, their desperate (bi-yearly, studio funded) futile attempt to make (the deeply unlikable, Jack Lemmon wannabe) Joseph Gordon Levitt 'Happen' (by giving him 'editorial' reign....once more) Oh how I love seeing stills of him from '3RD ROCK FROM THE SUN' or reading about the movies that 'Inspire' him......

IMDB's loss (imput wise) but financially profitable (otherwise)
