Why do people like him?

He's one of the more likable celebrities out there. People praise him for his off-beat, no ***** given attitude, but if you've even been paying the slightest amount of attention, he's a jerk. An ornery, cruel, miserable, sad little man.

"Oh Bill Murray is going to be a bartender! He's such a man of the people, soooooo funny!"

Honestly, I'd rather stick with a regular bartender. Dude's an ass, plain and simple. Take a look at what his coworkers said about him throughout the years, the spousal abuse he's done, and agreeing to utter trash like gar-field and the ghostbusters reboot, while depriving fans of ghostbusters three. Sure he made some slightly above average comedies in the 80s, but like the movies, not the jackass who played the part.

I liked Bill Murray in the 1980s because he had this unique, devil-may-care, deadpan, sarcastic delivery.

But you're right that he's nowhere near as "lovable" off screen as his fans make him off to be. I've heard multiple people who worked with him in the past describe him as a "brawler", someone who "loves to fight." He was in a famous fistfight with Chevy Chase, another "tough guy" from SNL who likes getting into nasty disputes with people.

People (who don't know him personally) still remember how funny he was when he was young and new on the scene in the 70s and 80s, when he joined SNL and starred in a few comedies that became classics. A lot of people who have never met him, don't have any clue what kind of a jack-ass Bill Murray is as a person, and there's a reason he hasn't gotten a lot of acting gigs in the past 25 years; nobody in Hollywood wants to deal with him anymore. It's the same issue Chevy Chase has.

This bafflement about B Murray is probably in part due to a generational gap..

Genx/boomers remember SNL, his good movies in the 80s/1990s. How different/irreverent he was from other comics at the time. Millinials and GenZ can see his movies, but it is not quite the same thing...time has passed and his movies are not a part of 'hip' culture anymore. (Expt Groundhog day)

I never really found Bob Hopes humor funny, and he was a icon to the 'Greatest Generation'. So it kind of makes sense that millinials and Gen Z don't 'get' why our generations have such respect for him.

If you are right, then that would imply that he truly is a decent actor - because his on-screen persona is one of a friendly, funny and charismatic dude.

Having said that, I feel like he became a big name on hollywood despite his actions, not because of them - which means there was a lot of luck involved.
