At least he won one. There are a lot of truly great actors who have been nominated and never won. Or haven't been nominated at all. Oscars really are a popularity contest more than an award based solely on the merits.
Here's just a shortlist of people that prove my assertion:

Max von Sydow - Never won, a serious travesty
Peter O'Toole - Honorary Oscar only
Alan Rickman - Never even nominated
Sigourney Weaver
Patrick Stewart - Never nominated
Danny Devito - Never nominated
Robert Redford
John Goodman - Never nominated
Malcolm McDowell - Never nominated
Ian McKellen
Joaquin Phoenix
Ed Harris
Clint Eastwood
Harrison Ford
Liam Neeson
Glenn Close
Amy Adams

and the list goes on...

Don't get me started on the list of people who've won that didn't deserve it AT ALL.
