On this day in 1977, a scant few days after we lost the King of Rock & Roll, we lost the comic genius that was Julius "Groucho" Marx.

I remember when he passed. My mom had the TV blasting for news on Elvis. I heard the newscaster say Groucho had died. I walked into kitchen with tears in my eyes and told my mom. My mom told whoever was on the phone "I have to go, my son just told me Groucho died." She then got down on her knees and hugged me.

He was a legend. He had a wit faster than lightning on crank. He and his brothers improvised many of their movie lines—and they had really GOOD screenwriters, like S.J. Perlman, writing the scripts. One time, as they were about to shoot a scene, Groucho turned to the writers and said, “If you hear one of your own lines, whistle.”
