Surprising things you found out on the internets

Watched an Esther Williams (swimming star of the 40s-50s) doc, and found out that Jeff Chandler, an ultra-macho looking & acting actor of the era, was a cross dresser. Sort of the last guy you would suspect.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. Except for Esther, who immediately cut off their relationship.

I found out Frisians are a whole separate ethnic group, not Dutch.

reply

Neither did I. Have heard of their horses. Have their own langunge, too.

Which is apparently *the* closest-related to English! Thanks OTB!

I found out today Angela Lansbury was 58 when she started season 1 of murder she wrote. I can't believe executives would cast a woman that age in 1984. They're just starting to do it now.

The ultimate schoolmarm.

I had no idea JW was such a player.

Me either. The whole interview is great. His proudest achievement: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nt83Rs5uOc4

Wow, what a find! I normally eschew Hollywood gossip, but both stories were amazing! Of course it involved Letterman, my paisan'...

The closing line on the first about Dave really rang true, especially if the normally bulletproof Norm MacDonald's touching and heartfelt farewell tears made him just pat Norm on the back. Fascinating that he and Leno were best friends before that evil woman made the Today Show decision, though Jay went along.

And the chef's kiss moment proving Jimmie was indeed a player was the casual use of "macher!"

An out-of-control bad boy from my hometown who hated everyone not Norwegian and even beat up a wounded Ukrainian on crutches in his late teens just for not being Norwegian, is now a doctor. I wonder if he sometimes looks at a scar he created. I knew someone with his name was a doctor in my hometown, but the name is widespread so I just assumed it had to be someone else.

turned out that while he did some prison time in his early 20s he was able to do some medical education there and continued after coming out. He is a private doctor though. I think there is some law preventing people with violent felonies from treating children, so he can not work anywhere or have any patient. But glad he turned it around.

reply

That is interesting. Probably in the US, his felonies would have kept him out of medical school, perhaps even nursing school.

Maybe he's one of those 'prosocial' sociopaths/psychopaths.
