Recommendations Please!

Lots of y’all know I’ve been on an Italian genre films kick for years but I tend to watch movies off the filmographies off of a core group of directors and actors. I’d love some recommendations for Italian films I haven’t come across yet. I’m not talking about films from directors like Federico Fellini, but specifically Italian Genre Films. I know I have a blind spot in Italian spy and sword/sandals movies from the 60s.

I probably missed some, but this is a list of what I’ve already seen so recommendations will be easier to make. So if anyone is into these films and knows of some I might like that I’ve missed, I’d greatly appreciate your recommendations. Thanks in advance!

That's some list!

I searched and can't see Dellamorte Dellamore (1994) aka Cemetery Man on it much to my surprise, you really haven't seen it? It's directed by Michele Soavi (The Church, Delirium/Stage Fright). I also can't see The Sect (1991) on your list, that's another from him.

I'll also name some that I haven't seen but are on my watchlist. These are all giallo films except for Arcane Sorcerer;
My Dear Killer (1972)
Watch Me When I Kill (1977)
The Bloodstained Butterfly (1971)
The Bloodstained Shadow (1978)
The Possessed (1965)
Autopsy (1975)
Nine Guests for a Crime (1977)
The Sister of Ursula (1978)
Arcane Sorcerer (1996)

CEMETARY MAN IS SO DAMN COOL...BLIND RENTAL FROM BLOCKBUSTER TURNED LIFELONG LOVE.

reply

Indeed I have seen Cemetery Man and I must have left it off the list. I wonder if it’s logged on LetterboxD. I’m very familiar with Soavi, Stage Fright being my favorite, but I’ve not seen The Sect. It sure would have been interesting if he had started directing around 10 years earlier. I have not seen any of the others you listed either, so they are going on my watch list. I appreciate it!

reply

If you're into dramas, the directing in this is insane.

Adding it now. 👍

You've seen all the good gialli that I know of, but I noticed a few Spaghetti Westerns that you might want to check out:

Kill Them All and Come Back Alone (1968) – This one is directed by Enzo G. Castellari and I think you’ll like it. It’s my second favorite Castellari film after The Inglorious Bastards (1977).

Texas, Adios (1966) – Starring Franco Nero and directed by Ferdinando Baldi. This one plays more like a John Wayne Western than a Spaghetti Western, but it's still pretty good and worth a watch. Nero is really cool in it.

Pistol for 100 Coffins AKA A Gun for One Hundred Graves (1968) – Dir. Umberto Lenzi. I reviewed this one on Letterboxd, but the TL;DR is that it's very similar to Death Rides a Horse (1967) yet distinct enough to stand on its own. It’s been released under a bunch of different titles, so it might be on your list under a different name. If you haven't seen it yet, it’s a decent spaghetti western and definitely worth checking out.

The Colossus of Rhodes (1961)
Sodom and Gomorrah (1962)

👆These last two are Sword and Sandal films. Sergio Leone directed them, though I think he’s uncredited. They're OK but nothing like his later films that he would go on to greatness with. They still might be worth a watch, though.

reply

Where do you rank The Big Racket and Street Law on your Enzo G list?

I’ve been on a Lenzi marathon but haven gotten to that one yet. I’m getting into his obscure stuff now.

But yeah, I haven’t seen any of thes but I will be adding them. Thanks for the summaries.

reply

I actually haven't seen those. I really should watch them. That's my blind spot for Italian cinema; the 70s Italo-crime cop movies.

reply

You definitely need to check those two out. Both are highly rated great examples of the euro crime genre, in my opinion.

reply

My favorite Italian films are the Western-comedy series:
They Call Me Trinity
Trinity Is Still My Name
My Name Is Nobody

One of the weirdest WTF movies I've ever seen in my life:
Swept Away (Travolti da un insolito destino nell'azzurro mare d'agosto)

reply

I THINK I AGREE....THE COMEDY WESTERNS ARE MY FAVORITE ITALIAN EXPORTS AS WELL.

reply

I’ve avoided the Trinity films because I just didn’t think I’d like them, but I will definitely get around to those.

That last film sounds right up my alley. 👍

reply

Great! I hope you enjoy them.

reply

I Just finished Swept Away and wow. I actually saw the first 10 minutes of this a few years back and I thought it was a basic shipwrecked comedy so I turned it off. Raffaella was just so obnoxious on the yacht and I wrongly thought the whole movie might be like that. I really wished I had kept watching back then. Lol This movie was really good with all the twist and turns and your right, lots of wtf moments. When you make it through the battle of the classes and strange ride in the middle of the film you’re rewarded with a really emotional ending. I was surprised to find the director was a woman.

I really enjoyed it. 8/10

reply

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I watched only the last part of the movie on TV decades ago and found it disturbing and bizarre. It must be a classic because my library has several copies of it so I just reserved to see the rest.

I just found out there was a remake with Guy Ritchie, but you watched the right one.

reply

Avoid the remake.

reply

My Cousin Vinny.

reply

Isn’t that the one where he talks about grits?

reply

He's Italian - that's all I remember.

reply

Yes, he talks about grits.

reply

I watched these recently

Puzzle (1974)
Short Night of Glass Dolls (1971)
Five Dolls for an August Moon (1970)

reply

Thanks! I will add them.

reply

Oh, I see Five Dolls for an August Moon has Edwige Fenech in the cast. Bumped to the top of the list. 😀

reply

She was definitely the reason I watched it

reply

Some of my favorite gialli are Sergio Martino’s with her as the lead actress. She was truly mesmerizing.
