Do you think men keep their hair short because of convenience or culture?

I mean, I think women are encouraged to grow their hair longer than men in order to look more "feminine" and to conform to a beauty standard, which is a cultural thing due to society being dominated by men.

But do men keep their hair short because of convenience (and they are not pressured as much as women to value their physical appearance) or is it also a cultural thing?

Personally, as a man I've entertained the thought of growing my hair long (despite its inconvenience) but I've kept it short to feel more attractive to women. Based on my experience I think it is also a cultural thing for men to keep their hair short.

I've kept the same haircut for most of my life. I usually go about 6-7 weeks between haircuts and if I go longer I'm pretty miserable. I like keeping shorter hair as it's more comfortable and cooler. I could experiment with growing out my hair but I hate those longer hair styles.

So I guess it's a matter of convenience and comfort for you then?

I like to think keeping your hair short as a guy will never go out of style.

The Bible says that for a woman to have long hair, "...it is a glory to her..." e.g. I love this gorgeous woman's beautiful mane https://www.google.com/search?gs_ssp=eJzj4tVP1zc0TCs0MTUqscg1YPTiS83NzKlUSM7PLUhMz8sHAJA2Cec&q=emily+compagno&rlz=1CAHUTT_enUS942&oq=emily+campagno&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUqDwgBEC4YChiDARixAxiABDIGCAAQRRg5Mg8IARAuGAoYgwEYsQMYgAQyCQgCEAAYChiABDIJCAMQABgKGIAEMg8IBBAAGAoYgwEYsQMYgAQyCQgFEAAYChiABDIJCAYQABgKGIAEMgkIBxAAGAoYgAQyCQgIEAAYChiABNIBCjE1NDI5ajBqMTWoAgCwAgA&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

I was the oldest of 4 sons in a military family. When we were boys, dad had one of those home barber kits and used to regularly give us boot camp style haircuts. I hated 'em! When I became a teenager, I rebelled and started to let it grow. Dad finally relinquished and started calling me, "The Mop."😁

Nowadays, I prefer it short, thick and neat. It's much easier to maintain that way. As far as I'm concerned, it grows too fast and quickly becomes a pain in the ass. The upside is, when I do visit my barber that I've been seeing for over 20 years, we get into spirited conversations about movies.

Ah interesting experience! So for you, you keep your hair short because of convenience, but also experimented with long hair too.

reply

Yes, like I said, it's much easier to maintain and feels good. My long hair was more than an experiment. It was an act of defiance during what many refer to as, "the hippie movement."

1. Balding: men tend to thin or bald as they age. Cutting it short looks nice and avoids a hairy sneak attack in your soup.

2. Work: women too tend to keep their hair shoulder length in farming due to equipment that could scalp them. Long hair can get caught in machinery, it makes things hotter, and requires maintenance that farmers really do need want to bother with.

3. Esthetic: short hair on a man looks professional. Long hair when well maintained can be nice, but a suit looks better with a clean haircut

4. Women: every guy has angered a woman. Women don't think twice about grabbing handfuls of hair. I'm sure our ancestors had this issue. That's probably why all cultures have short hairstyles.

6. Debris: I don't know if you've been stick in a desert for two weeks without a shower or power, but that scalp gets really scuzzed up sand and Debris. It's easier to clean short hair in this situation. It's also why women get shower trucks during annual training.

Just a few thoughts. I've been growing my hair for 3 months. It's getting wild and I'm loving it. Every morning I wake up with half a Mohawk or with the Misfit bangs. It's funny.

Oh, there's definitely a strong cultural component. And we know this because men's hairstyles -- the same as women's -- vary over time and by geography. And the length of one's hair has cultural signals of conformity and non-comformity and all that malarkey. I'm sure everyone can think of a particular hairstyle that belongs to a particular subculture -- mods, rockers, goths, punks, skinheads, &c.

I had long hair -- really long hair at one point -- as a teenager. After that, like a lot of men, I found a (short) hairstyle that seems to suit me and stopped bothering about fashion. And I'd say I keep it short for convenience -- long hair was a hassle. But there probably is also a cultural element.

I am less ugly with short hair.

My dad and I had a conversation once during his retirement years about how his funeral should be handled. I asked him if there was any other detail I should pay attention to. He said very simply, "Make sure I've got a military style haircut." It was so poignant. I honored his wish and he looked so damn nice in that casket with that fresh haircut.
