"Comments are turned off"

Why does YouTube do this? And there is no way to look at comments that have already been posted! This, to me, marks a huge failure as a "social media" outlet. I mean it's no longer "social" if communication is one-way only--we already have TV!

The person posting the video may have disabled comments. This could be for any number of reasons, including simply not wanting to deal with comments.

YouTube may disable comments, https://www.flintzy.com/blog/2021/09/16/what-to-do-if-youtube-automatically-turns-off-comments-on-videos/

Any infringement of speech is a potential loss and grave harm to society. But for the comments section I could never have surmised that the final lyric of "Badge" was not "now she's rotten tomato" but is, actually, "now she's writing to Mabel." I admit that the rotten tomato interpretation made poor sense, but who the heck is "Mabel?"

reply

They usually do that on kid videos to keep trolls and pedos away.

Was there a specific video you watched that had the comments turned off or are you just asking in general?

reply

Well, I've encountered it frequently, but this was on the video for "Badge" by Cream.

I ended up on an Instagram account recently of a celeb I've never heard of where she took a picture with her young niece who clearly had some form of disability like down syndrome. Let's just say, she should have turned the comments off.

Any fan made video about Ghostbusters 2016 had the comments turned off and that just proved the creator of those videos are cowards.

The party who post the video decides how comments are dealt with - not YouTube.

Can have none, free for all or they can be held and reviewed before allowing them to show up.

When they're turned off with something "news" related, you can probably assume it's propaganda.
