Favorite Films Released in 1977 ?

LetterboxD is really useful for tracking what you’ve watched and your watching trends. I’ve always noticed that I have watched more films from 1977 than any other year, not that I’ve rated more films in that year higher than others. Does anyone else know what year you have seen the most films from, and what’s your top 10 from 1977?

Here are a couple of examples of LetterboxD if you don’t already use it and are interested.

What did you find better about IMDb? I haven’t used it since they removed the forums.

reply

I don't remember Letterbox so I couldn't compare... My watch-list and ratings are on IMDB, which I've used since 2001.. I like the Advanced Search.. I like the IMDB lists. Especially for a rare movie. I'll click on it, and see every list it made, and find great movies that way. I might read the critic reviews if it's a rare movie I just liked. I don't spend more than 20 minutes a month on there.

I happened to run across a reply of yours from 18 years ago. 😀

My most popular years. In a few months time 2023 will be amongst the top three (may eventually claim top spot) it's on 41 already and I've still got plenty I want to watch;

2007 - 51 movies seen
1981 - 47 movies seen
2005 - 45 movies seen

I've only seen 22 from 1977, in any case here's my top 10;
1) Suspiria
2) Annie Hall
3) Sorcerer
4) Star Wars
5) Martin
6) Close Encounters of the Third Kind
7) The Sentinel
8) Shock Waves
9) The Duellists
10) Orca

Honorable Mentions; The Deep, The Hills Have Eyes, Rabid, The Psychic, High Anxiety, Full Circle (aka - The Haunting of Julia).

Both of my girls say Shock Waves scared the hell out of them when they were kids. It’s funny what odd movies make an impression on kids, and Shock Waves isn’t that scary. They say the same about Death Ship (1980).

Shock Waves has an odd and creepy atmosphere. Not frightening but desolate. I think the OST plays a big part in it.

I only saw 34 movies from 1977, and I'm sure that number decreases with every year. I think the 70s were the best decade for American movies, but the 60s for foreign movies. Italian movies probably took the biggest dip. "A Special Day" is the only Italian movie I loved from the late 70s and the political crime movies of the early 70s are mostly forgettable. De Sica made some great movies but died in 74, and my 2nd favorite director, Luchino Visconti, died in 76. Pasolini was murdered somewhere in between but I thought his first two movies were leaps and bounds better than anything he did, except for the documentary "Meetings" which was great, a field pre-empted by the French.

I go on IMDB and they fucking change their look. I hardly ever use it anyway, but the layout/set-ups are always for the worse.
