New vs. old movies

Which generally offers more entertainment value?

reply

old movies by a long shot, new movies are total shit. too much propaganda...

reply

Usually old movies. They tend to be more creative and daring.

reply

what period do you consider old?

reply

Anything before 1930. Anything after 1930 is new.

(For this question, I guess anything before 1990.)

reply

i consider old movies pre 1960 or so.

reply

Old movies, especially the ones where directors had the freedom to create what they wanted.

reply

But they didn't have the tools to create anything they wanted.

reply

I’ll take a low budget and limitations on practical effects with a director who is creating his actual vision over these politically correct money driven string of endless sequels and remakes we see today.

reply

Old, with the exception of action movies.

Oh, I don't have a strong preference. The main difference is that older films have been through a filtering process and most of the bad films have been forgotten.

reply

... most of the bad films have been forgotten.

Unfortunately good ones too, lost culture in both cases.

The point is that if someone watches a film from, say, 1959 it's likely to be something like Hiroshima, Mon Amour or The 400 Blows or Some Like It Hot. Those films are not any more or less representative of 1959 than is Revenge of the Virgin or Terror in the Midnight Sun. But nobody's watching those films any more.

One day, contemporary films will have been 'filtered' in the same manner and most people will only be watching the cream of the crop. That's just how it works.

I DON'T MEAN TO KISS YOU ASS TOO MUCH...BUT DAMN...I JUST TO MENTION ONCE AGAIN...YOUR POSTS ARE AWESOME...I WILL BE STEALING THE GIST OF THIS POST AND REPEATING IT IN A MUCH LESS CORDIAL AND WELL-STATED MANNER IN THE FUTURE.

reply

Older ones. Pretty much a lot of stuff made before 2016 is better written and better acted in general.

reply

Whats the cut off point for old/new here?

1990? 2000? 2010? 2020?

Draw me a line and I'll answer.

reply

Guess it's relative to current time, for most people.

2000 maybe.

reply

the actors had more gravitas back in the day. there is no modern day burt lancaster or henry fonda.

reply

I'd agree with that. I'd say the last one is Clint. Michael Shannon gets close.
