Top 25 horror films

Seems it’s been a minute since a thread like this has happened, so WTH. I leave it up to you to define “top;” personally my list is split between highest rated and favorite/most rewatchable. While I have rated over 1500 horror titles, I doubt my list will dip much in to “obscure” territory. That would likely require a much higher number or a specific vote count caveat:

The Exorcist (1973)
The Thing (1982) - as a lover of the genre, these are the only two horror films I have rated 10/10. There is an admittedly high wheat/chaff ratio, alas.
The Wicker Man (1973)
American Psycho
Dead Ringers (1988)
It Follows
An American Werewolf in London
Psycho (1960)
The Fly (1986)
Bone Tomahawk
Inside (2007)
The Bad Seed (1956)
Shaun of the Dead
Let the Right One In (2008)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
Diabolique (1955)
Altered States
Angel Heart
Braindead/Dead Alive (1992)
Fright Night (1985)
Evil Dead II
Splinter (2008)
Grabbers
Dead Set (2008)
Excision
The Children (2008)

Great list. So many on there were close contenders for mine, painfully omitted. The only one of yours I haven’t seen, Black Moon, was of course added to my watchlist. Since you listed Frankenstein, I must give a plug to Son of Frankenstein, which I rank even higher, and my favorite Bela Lugosi role.

reply

I feel like Videodrome should be right up my alley, but I’ve seen it a couple of times and it just haven’t clicked yet. I’m going to add it to my watchlist and give it another chance.

No particular order

Final Destination
Barbarian
Nightmare on Elm Street
The Ring
The Descent
Jeepers Creepers
Invasion on the Body Snatchers
Rosemarys Baby
Orca
The Shining
The Thing
Poltergeist
From Hell
Unfriended
The Exorcist
Sinister
Audition
Session 9
Childs Play
Girl House
Valentine
Happy Birthday to Me
The Swerve
The Babadook
A Tale of two Sisters
It Follows
Haunt
Drag me to Hell

reply

Lack of release years makes this more difficult to rate, but the Final Destination series is a guilty pleasure for me, and the three I possibly haven’t seen: Girl House, Valentine and The Swerve don’t particularly appeal, alas. Session 9 and It Follows are of course brilliant.

reply

Almost everything is recent, after 1995.

reply

Great list. Stand outs for me:

I could watch The Wicker Man over and over. You know Howie isn’t going to make it off that island the second he gets there. My favorite part is the classroom scene. “You despicable lit take liars!”

Dead Alive is an absolute one of a kind. What a weird movie, and the creature effects are so cool.

I always thought Let the Right One In was such a great story. Those bullies got what was coming to em. 😀

reply

God, I love The Wicker Man so much. Own all three cuts, theatrical, director’s and final, as well as its two soundtrack releases: Silvascreen and Studio Canal, and have seen it countless times. It’s the single greatest example of dread on screen I can think of, and yet one of my favorite depictions of terror as well (“O Lord!”). Absolutely cracking.

Just watched Dead Alive again a few weeks ago for the nth time, and it totally holds up. Peak Peter Jackson, imo.

Highly recommend the LtROI novel if a fan of the story. Actually the Let Me In remake adhered more closely to the book, and captured the Håkan substory more faithfully.

reply

Angel Heart is one I finally saw for the first time about 2 months ago, excellent.

reply

So freaking good. The mystery/horror subgenre is painfully underrepresented, and Lisa Bonet is peak sexy. Not to mention it’s genuinely scary imo.

Again, so many list entries that barely made mine. Zombie/Zombi 2 on the big screen was the culmination of one of my favorite horror movie marathon days starting with A Serbian Film and Snowtown. The Woman in Black is one of my favorite TV movies which actually scared me. If you liked Who Can Kill a Child, I’d recommend The Children from my list. And regarding your last: one of my most memorable Thanksgiving dinners was at a family friend’s, where I found myself sitting next to James Karen (only in L.A.), who was happy to chat about RotLD with a fan. A lovely man, RIP.

Have not seen three of yours: Death Smiles on a Murderer, Hunter’s Blood and Hell of the Living Dead.

[edit] Had a chuckle that more than one of my recent recommends to you were on your list here. :D

reply

All three of those are guilty pleasures.

Death Smiles on a Murderer is a trippy Poe inspired Italian horror directed by D’Amato and starring the horrible Klaus Kenski. Very nightmarish and weird.

Hunters blood is my favorite back woods hillbillies survival movie. Really fun and stars lots of 80s character actors.

Hell of the Living Dead is a low budget Bruno Mattei Italian zombie flick. Exploitation at its finest.

reply

Coincidentally, the only one of yours I haven’t seen if your first. Re: your third, see my reply just above to Mrmojo4700. Sleepaway Camp is the perfect example why many films should be gone in to blind. I have sworn off trailers and am happier for it. The Wailing was quite good, but I rank Na’s The Chaser as the most edge of my seat film ever seen. And I love The Exorcist III so much. Highly recommend the Legion director’s cut and/or fanedit for peak versions of it. Great book too.

reply

If you can find Salvage give it a go. It's another one to go into blind. It's pretty low budget, but I really like it.

reply

I have real difficulty ranking films. Especially picking favorites as I often fall into conflict with several different concepts. Listing the films I consider to be the 'best', my favorites... somewhere in between.

Here's something of a list. Ordered by release year;

Psycho (1960)
The Innocents (1961)
The Birds (1963)
Repulsion (1965)
Rosemary's Baby (1968)

The Exorcist (1973)
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
Black Christmas (1974)
Suspiria (1977)
Halloween (1978)

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
Alien (1979)
Friday the 13th (1980)
The Evil Dead (1981)
The Thing (1982)

Poltergeist (1982)
Tenebrae (1982)
Videodrome (1983)
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Lifeforce (1985)

The Fly (1986)
Hellraiser (1987)
Candyman (1992)
Scream (1996)
Evil Dead (2013)

reply

I had mostly left gialli off my list, but I love Tenebre. Great, beautifully shot film with an amazing soundtrack.

reply

Can totally identify with that problem. I would sometimes belabor a post for ages. Over the years I’ve relaxed more, and am usually satisfied to throw in a disclaimer and call it good enough. I more enjoy compiling lists with more specific criteria, however. More fun.

Can’t find a single criticism of your list. Like/love ‘em all.

I love society.

reply

Lots of goodies there. I about wore out my copy of The Stepfather on VHS back in the day. And as a grizzled horror fan who has seen some shit, Henry:PoaSK is one of the few films to really shake me up. Feel like I need a shower afterwards. Have had the Maniac Cops on my watchlist forever. Time to bump those up.
