I never really paid attention to those comics, but i do recall smirking at some of them on the rare chance I stumble upon them. I can understand office/bureaucratic humor somewhat although I've never really worked in an office before.
It was a ripoff of The Far Side, the same visual style and geek humor. That's why it became so popular, I think. Everyone loved the geek humor and visuals of that comic so much that when Dilbert came along, it was like an extension of that comic.
I was a huge fan back in the 1990s, when I had an office job I hated, and I was trying to escape by spending my evenings in night school. I was such a fan that I wrote Adams several times, and he wrote back. Or maybe someone using his name wrote back, but he did encourage fans to send him "I hate my job" stories, and more than one professional writer has said that writers would much rather answer letters than buckle down and work.
So maybe I did correspond with Adams, back when he was sane, and I was stuck in a job I hated. Well, the night school paid off, I escaped from Cubicle Hell, and Adams lost his fucking mind. So I'm no longer a fan.
Yes. And not only did I like the comic, I watched the animated series, which had the perfect voiceover cast and theme song. I really feel bad for all of the talented people who contributed to it, including Danny Elfman.
