Random NHL hits: Tie Domi and anger issues among players….

NFL just doesn’t do it for me anymore. Game has changed too much; rules; can’t hit the QB; sub par officiating; not fun anymore; a good game for gambling, but way too many variables so you better know what you’re doing

But hockey, it’s making a comeback for me…loved it as kid in the 80s and a young adult in the 90s. But defensive tactics like the neutral zone trap employed by those New Jersey Devil teams in the 90s and other defensive strategies sapped my enthusiasm as the game became more plodding for a minute. Gone are the days of Gretzky and Lemieux tallying close to 200 points and no one is touching The Great One’s season record for goals (92) any time soon; please correct me if you opine differently ….

And then there’s the fighting….sure violence is sorta medieval, primitive and immature with a bunch of maniacs throwing haymakers on skates; you’re playing hockey for a living in full arenas across North America with a bunch of fans screaming , why all the anger? But what can I say, it’s somewhat entertaining and a great release and diversion from the experience we call life….

Which brings me to Tie Domi….five foot nothing , but a ball of fury at 200,210 pounds….his fights were awesome, childish, scary, infantile, vicious, stupid, fabulous and silly, and damn, just downright thrilling at times and hilarious too…

Round one with big, bad Bob Probert (RIP), classic….

The “claiming “ the title with the belt mimicking…..hahahahahaha, gets me every time….

Enjoy….join in with your faves if you wish….

Salut!

As a lifelong Leaf fan, I hated Tie Domi. Terrible player who often costed us a power play opportunities by seeking vengeance.

That’s funny, I have few Canadian friends here in the states and one Leaf fan in particular.…..they’re all indifferent towards Domi- one says he wouldn’t mind fighting him, but we make fun of him and tell him he’s just a blathering drunk who’d probably get his ass handed to him….

reply

So many Leaf fans love him because he's a tough guy, but I wanted him off my team. I can't stand these talentless enforcers who do nothing for the team.

I agree, though the aggressive play does offer some excitement and adds tension and drama to the game…just my depreciated two cents….

That’s why I left in the late 90s. Mind you, I’ve never played the game, just an interested observer; but those defensive strategies of the 90s, particularly the neutral zone trap, made the game a tough watch. It has since opened up a bit but I believe the 1-3-1 is still employed and that too can be difficult to enjoy at times. It’s a nuanced strategy that can be appreciated by the hockey intelligentsia, but nonetheless can make the game appear to be a slog to watch.

I watched a game where, I believe it was Tampa Bay playing the Flyers, and it was a game of keep-away. I remember reading later about that game and other similar defensive sets, and it upset and downright pissed off some genuine hockey purists.

I appreciate the reply and your thoughts, joogle, and I’ve always wondered what the die-hards thought of the evolution (or devolution) of the game from the fast and frenzied 80s to the 90s and to what we have now. I’m returning to the the game slowly, bu t I think the Stanley Cup Playoffs are a great tournament that goes beyond just gruff beards; it’s intense with high pressure situations and intrigue and storylines that make it an enjoyable viewing experience.

I’m in the states and don’t have many hockey fan friends, the few I do have are Canadian (though one friend is from Michigan-close enough- another from Washington state). I’m definitely not an expert on hockey strategy, but I like the game, with the intensity and skill required. Checking and fighting were part of the high flying 80s, so maybe it’s nostalgia for me. Nevertheless, a great game.

Thanks for the YouTube clip…

Appreciate the time….

I know Robinson because of course he coached the Kings. I remember the name from his playing days and he’s on that NHL’s Top 100 list, and a hall of famer. But I remember very little of his playing career. I thought he was a skilled defenseman who didn’t fight….was that rare?

reply

robinson didn't fight much and schultz was the reigning champ. this fight gave robinson a reputation and he wasn't messed with after.

I forget your fandom goes WAY back. I’ve watched a lot of fights on YouTube, but Ive never seen that one….vicious stuff. Seeing action like that reminds me : those linesmen have to be tough also to get in there and stop these ferociously fired-up fighters.
