Pershing Square, downtown Los Angeles

Who's seen this? I always wondered why it was so ugly. It was a conceptual art design made in 1994 (hence the colors).

Have a look and let me know your thoughts. Some want it levelled and a functional, green park installed.

But since it's art, should it be left?

I like it as it is. Also, I'm not sure what a functional green park is but the plot is too small for anything that might give a sense of open space.

Los Angeles is concrete gray and sandy soil brown, ugly, hot, and the sun glaring off the smog hurts the eyes.

So a flat, hot, glare-filled open space is hardly a comfortable and relaxing environment, the place DESPERATELY needs some green!

The first time I saw it I was really confused by what it's meant to be. And it hasn't grown on me. But if it was just a standard park nobody would be talking about it so in that way, I guess it's cool.

reply

Cool? Right now you could probably fry eggs or bake cookies on the surface.

WTF were they thinking, putting that plaza is THAT climate.

I DIG IT...THE EARTH IS GOING TO RETAKE OUR SHIT SOON ENOUGH ANYWAY...WHY HELP THOSE GREEN PLANT BASTARDS OUT?

reply

No, if they make Pershing Square into a "green park", it will be just like every other park. I prefer the austerity. Green parks tend to be taken over by breeders and their squalling children. 🤣

I don't know if anyone here has read John Rechy's classic queer novel "City of Night". But he described Pershing Square in detail. It was long fabled as a homosexual cruising park. Lol. I strolled through there years ago and it's not in the best part of town. So I preferred to just admire the design.

Tickety, are you in LA?
