What did you taco salads watch this week (06/26-07/02)

From now on, every time I’ll be out of inspiration I’ll just call you guys by the name of the last meal I ate. Ha! Taco salads!

I am now partime due to some
contract issue with the government of Canada, so only working 12.5 hours/week. Less money, more movies:

Jackass 4.5 (2021 Netflix):”Through outrageous, never-before-seen footage, cut footage and outtakes from "Jackass Forever, witness the making of the Jackass crew's last go at wild stunts”. I haven’t seen their last film yet butt I appreciated peeing some of the craziest stunts accompanied by interviews with the “cast” about their comeback film after a 10 year “break”. I think I can blindly agree with all the reviews saying this was better than the actual movie.I think it’s hownos who mentioned the exaggerated amounts of male penises; I second and third that. This one might be even worse. Bottom line is, I wildly enjoyed the good vibes that were on set. They really gave their best to do the worst! Johnny Knoxville literally almost die skydiving as his parachute almost fell off. After watching this I ordered Jackass Forever DVD. My rating: 7.5/10

Patriot’s day(2016 Netflix): Well made film, overall. Tense and trilling, as it should be. I didn’t like the make-up job on Bacon and Goodman though. It looked like masks. My rating: 7/10

The man from Toronto (2022 Netflix): Random fact: I leave 6 hours away from Toronto. I’ve been there once and it’s beautiful city. As for the film, if you like this kind of action-comedy, if you like the two leads, I don’t see why you wouldn’t enjoy it. Although the first 20 minutes are very dumb, the final product turns out to be exactly what you can expect from it and what it sets out to be. Simple mindless fun. My rating: 6.5/10

The fifth wave (2016 TV): This is like the most “below average” movie if there ever was one. There are some decent special effects, the story is trying hard, the cast too and yet, just never quite come together to form a satisfying cinematic experience. I onlywatched it for Moretz, who I fell in love with as an actress after seeing Kick-ass. Her character was a bit boring. My rating: 5/10

My friend Dahmer (2017 DVD): Solid biopic with a good cast, great atmosphere and interesting story. I just wished I’d seen more crazy shit and less shit “acting” crazy. A little more than an hour into the movie and they still hadn’t up the ante on the psycho stuff. My favorite scene: When he dumps the girl at the ball to go get junk food. My rating: 7.5/10

Scrubs S4: From my notes I was at S6 but since it’s been a 3 year break between me and that show, I restarted at S4, which is an exceptional season overall. This show is funny, sexy, authentic, quirky, well-written and has plenty of unique and amazing characters. I simply can’t say enough good things about it. My rating: 9/10

Seinfeld S1-2: I decided to finally give this a shot so I sometimes put this on while I’m working from home and I can say a few things about it; the cast lacks charisma, the characters are a tad uni-dimensional but the script and overall happy vibe makes up for it. Not hilarious but fun to watch for a simple and feel-good show. My rating: 7/10

Haven't done one of these for a while. Spent quite a time away from this forum for one thing. Anyway, let's give it a go... Haven't seen any of yours... except Seinfeld, which I'm fond of.

This week, I have mostly been watching 'challenging' cinema. Quite a lot of it by the same director:

The House That Jack Built (Lars von Trier, 2018) [Mubi]

I loved a lot of things about this film. It may well be Lars von Trier’s funniest (although it’s a very dark, very bleak comedy) but it’s also unforgivably overlong and self-indulgent. I could have lost a good 40 minutes from this. But I enjoyed it (if that's the word), just not as much as I was hoping to.

3/5

Dogville (Lars von Trier, 2003) [Amazon rental]

I think his best film is Dancer in the Dark, but I wouldn’t argue with anyone claiming it is this one.

5/5

The Boss of It All (Lars von Trier, 2006) [Mubi]

Von Trier does a reasonably straightforward comedy. It’s not very funny. I don’t even think it’s supposed to be. But it’s an entertaining enough break from controversy for the director.

3/5

Nymphomaniac, Vols I & II (Lars von Trier, 2013) [Amazon rental]

Despite liking most of von Trier’s films, and absolutely loving some of them, I avoided this for nine years. A four hour long movie focused on female sexuality and sex addiction by cinema’s biggest jerk-king provocateur? No thanks, Lars, not today… But actually it’s one of his few films that doesn’t feel like a prank. But it’s also just a touch underwhelming really. It’s… fine. But, to me, fairly minor von Trier.

3/5

Air Doll (Hirokazu Kore-eda, 2009) [Criterion Channel]

A sex doll comes to life and learns what it means to be human. Meditative. A bit heavy on plinky-plonk You Will Feel Something music, but nevertheless very good.

4/5

reply

Blue Velvet (David Lynch, 1986) [Criterion Channel]
The Straight Story (David Lynch, 1999) [Amazon rental]

Two of Lynch’s greatest films. Most people rate Blue Velvet highly. I think Straight Story gets a bit lost in the shuffle because, well, it’s a Disney movie and it’s very linear and more than a bit sentimental… but it’s also unmistakeably David Lynch, and it’s nice to see this side of him every now and again.

Both 5/5

Fat Girl (Catherine Breillat, 2001) [Criterion Channel]

Uncomfortable, occasionally brilliant with a silly, almost insulting ending that almost ruins the film, as Catherine Breillat laughs up her sleeve.

3/5

Let the Sunshine In (Claire Denis, 2017) [Criterion Channel]

Bit of a departure for Denis. I’d read this was a fairly conventional film. I’m not sure it is. It’s plotless for one thing. I’m not sure the critics I read noticed that as they were too taken with Juliet Binoche being great... which she is.

3/5

The Only Son (Yasujiro Ozu, 1936) [Criterion Channel]

Straightforward, well-observed, low-key domestic drama that’s gorgeously photographed. This Ozu chap might be going places, &c, &c.

I didn't really like the first 3 seasons of Seinfeld. This is a show that actually got better in the later seasons.

Channel Zero (2016-2018) anthology series season 2 No End House 9/10
Four friends learn that the No-End House is more than a haunted mansion when they confront strangely personal horrors in each room.
This was a very original 6 episode mystery. I did not see the twist coming, at all.

Season 3, Butcher's Block
A young woman and her schizophrenic sister move to a city haunted by a series of disappearances and, after suspecting that they may be connected to a baffling rumor, they must work together to discover what is preying on the city's residents.

I'm not sure why this series is listed as TV-14, it is most definitely TV-MA or R. Both of these seasons are super gory, and disturbing.

reply

I finished Channel Zero season 3 Butcher Block 5/10. Very disappointing. I loved season 2, but this felt like they just went with Alice in Wonderland on drugs. A lot of weird visuals, and gore, no story. Season 2 was brilliant with a look at the sacrifice and love between a father and daughter. This was a big let down.

reply

This all sounds interesting. I’ll look it up.

reply

Ok, I had never heard about this an hour ago and now I might order the four seasons for 45$.

reply

Definitely season 2. It will probably make you cry as a dad, pretty sad stuff.

I saw it on AMC+ an add on channel, which also has a lot of good movies.

reply

Now I want tacos! I haven't seen any of the movies you watched, but I was considering eventually watching The man from Toronto, Patriot's Day and The fifth wave.

I watched a lot of bad movies this week with a few good ones mixed in. I watched:

R.O.T.O.R. 1987 3/10 So I suffered through R.O.T.O.R. (1987). Horribly directed by Cullen Blaine, this is a really bad rip off of other much better sci-fi films. The film looks cheap and ugly. Performances are all terrible and unconvincing. The dialogue is ridiculously bad and reads as if it was written by a bunch of drunken children who have watched too many science fiction movies. The film feels longer than its run time. The only bright spot is Willard the sassy police robot, complete with his own police hat. There should have been more of him and less of everything else. I did snicker a few times at some of the ridiculously bad dialogue and acting, but that is about all the entertainment value this so-called film has to offer. This sucked.

Big Daddy 1999 6/10 This was alright. Not one of Sandler's best films, but not one of his worst. Some good moments though.

Going Overboard 1989 3/10 The first feature directed by Valerie Breiman, this was Adam Sandler's first feature film. This is like a bad student film. Sandler tells the audience at the start of the film it was made with no budget. I didn't mind Sandler talking directly to the audience. The problem is that the film isn't very funny or enjoyable. There were one or two slightly amusing moments, but the film drags on and feels longer than it is. The dialogue is pretty bad and the performances are poor. It's not good, but it is somewhat tolerable. I have seen worse, although this is definitely Sandler's worst film. I do think Sandler has the capability of being a good actor and he has demonstrated that in some of his other films, but here he doesn't show much talent or ability.

48 Hrs. 1982 6/10 This was just alright. Murphy's performance was pretty good, but I didn't care for Nolte's. The story was mildly interesting and the film wasn't as fun or entertaining as it should have been.

American Flatulators 1996 3/10 This is a really stupid and juvenile "film". That being said, I must confess I did laugh and groan (and possibly fart) more than once. Some of the puns were somewhat clever and some of the fake commercials showed some degree of creativity. The performances were intentionally ridiculous and silly and it seemed like the actors were commuted to the bit and were having fun. There are too many fart jokes in the film and it starts to run out of gas before reaching the end. The film bottoms out after a while, butt it might have worked better as a short film. I don't mean to be a bum, but this film stinks, although I have seen worse.

Krampus: The Christmas Devil 2013 2/10 I was on the naughty list and my punishment was watching Krampus: The Christmas Devil. I think that falls under the category of cruel and unusual punishment. Written and directed by Jason Hull, this Christmas themed horror film is about Krampus, the brother of Santa who has to punish the naughty children (like me). This film is not fun at all and is often boring, feeling longer than its runtime. The writing is mediocre at best. Performances range from flat and unconvincing to just alright. I liked Santa's performance best. Santa is a badass. Apparently the actor who played Santa, Paul Ferm, is a former Miami area homicide detective and he actually frightened one of the children and made him cry for real. There are a couple mildly interesting scenes, but this film is mostly an unsatisfying and unenjoyable mess.

God’s Not Dead 2014 4/10 There are a lot of problems in the film. The screenplay is a mess. There are unnecessary side plots that add nothing of value to the film.

Trog 1970 6/10 This actually wasn't that bad.

Tomboy 2011 9/10 I love this film. The screenplay is really well written and tells the story in an interesting and effective way. The film touches upon potentially controversial or divisive subjects of gender and sexuality in a gentle, moving and intelligent way, without being preachy or manipulative. Zoé Héran's performance is fantastic in a very subtle and quiet way.

Minions: The Rise of Gru 2022 6/10 This was alright, but not as funny or charming as the Despicable Me movies or the previous MInions movie.

Organ 1996 3/10 This was weird, but not in an interesting or entertaining way. It was weird in the most boring way possible. It dragged on at times and felt too long.

Lust for Frankenstein 1998 2/10 this is basically a poorly made porno very loosely connected to Frankenstein. The film is badly shot and the performances are pretty terrible.

Manos: The Hands of Fate 1966 2/10 The worst film I have ever seen.

Men with Brooms 2002 5/10 This wasn't as fun or as humorous as it should have been. A couple of funny moments.

Lie with Me 2005 8/10 I enjoyed this. Lauren Lee Smith is fantastic here, giving a bold, beautiful performance. Eric Balfour is good too. Some nice nudity for those who enjoy that sort of thing (male and female nudity so something for everyone).

I’ll Follow You Down 2013 6/10 This was fine. Story was fairly interesting and acting was pretty good.

Like a House on Fire 2021 7/10 Well acted, interesting film.

Sleeping Giant 2015 6/10 I didn't like some of the characters and couldn't relate to them, but some interesting moments.

Stage Fright 2014 8/10 Fun and entertaining.

Goldfinger 1964 9/10 a fun, fast paced film that satisfies the audience. It's entertaining and enjoyable.

He Laughed Last 1956 5/10 This wasn't funny and was not much fun.

I used to love love R.O.T.O.R when I was a kid. I thought the name "ROTOR" is super cool, it's like "ROBOT" + "MOTOR." Little did I know that "rotor" is just a regular word lol.

I don't remember anything about the movie, until... one day I stumbled upon it in one of the streaming sites. I thought, wow this is MY childhood right here! Without hesitations I clicked play right away.

Too bad, my childhood is ruined.

Finished one TV series:

Under the Banner of Heaven (2022) - I thought it was underwhelming. The lead detective didn't seem to know anything about the history of Mormonism and it's violent history. He was blissfully unaware. 6.5/10

Movies:

Appaloosa (2008) - Viggo and Harris were good. I thought the plot was a bit silly having it revolve around the woman and the love interest. Should have focused more on the Jeremy Irons character. 6.5/10

Sudden Fury (1975) - A Canadian made movie I have never heard of. Some of the woodland scenes in this movie are now subdivisions. The movie is quite good for a low budget movie from the 70s. The ending is a bit frustrating. 7/10

Shock (1946) - Decent thriller with Vincent Price. One of those movies where someone witnesses a murder and no one believes the person. Price was good as the bad guy. 7/10

Chato's Land (1972) - Charles Bronson could get away with playing native Americans. I liked this movie for all the character actors. Shot in Spain but I could have sworn it was the American West. 7/10

reply

Appaloosa: I really liked how the violence just happened casually, like it was no big thing. POW, POW, t’es morts! 8/10

Patriots Day: 8/10
The Fifth Wave: 6/10
My Friend Dahmer: 8/10

My last two weeks.

New York, New York (1977) - First of all, there was absolutely no earthly reason for this movie to be 2 hours and 43 minutes long. Second of all, I absolutely despised Jimmy Doyle. I’m probably sounding like I hated this movie, but no, I didn’t at all. It was good. It just had too many flaws. (7/10)

Top Gun: Maverick (2022) - It was good. I didn’t think it was absolutely amazing like a lot of people. (8/10)

Ivan’s Childhood (1962) - It was good. I think the nonlinear structure made it difficult for me to get fully immersed in the movie. I think it would have been better served without it. (8/10)

House of Flying Daggers (2004) - You know, for the first half of the movie I wasn’t impressed at all. It seemed like it was barely moving. After that I felt considerably different. I was actually mesmerized by some parts. The green bamboo forest looked so cool. Then the showdown in the snow at the end was fantastic. (8/10)

Hero (2002) - I didn’t like this as much as I thought. The way it played out was pretty anticlimactic. (7/10)

Watcher (2022) - A definite disappointment. I really thought there would be more to it. A lot of it was boring. (6/10)

So I Married an Axe Murderer (1993) - Good, but I thought I would like it a little more. I was disappointed Alan Arkin was only in it for about 5 minutes. I thought he had a much bigger part. (7/10)

Gozu (2003) - A weird and often gross movie. Lots of times I like this kind of thing more than this. Let me tell you, the last 20 minutes are absolutely not for the faint of heart. (7/10)

The Roaring Twenties (1939) - Really good. Liked it considerably better than expected. (8/10)

Black Hawk Down (2001) - Very good. I was mad at myself because I didn’t understand what was happening. If I did I would have liked it even more. (8/10)

The Country Girl (1954) (7/10)

reply

EuroTrip (2004) - Really good and underrated. It was funny. There were some things that didn’t work that well, but most of it did. (8/10)

The Princess (2022) - Quite a disappointing movie. I watched it because I thought the trailer looked good. It sure fooled me. The plot was extremely weak. Joey King (who I do like) as a tough girl able to kill a bunch of hulking dudes is just lame. (6/10)

Spiderhead (2022) I didn’t want to like this movie. I couldn’t help it. I didn’t understand what was bad about it. (7/10)

Kiss of Death (1947) (7/10)

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (2007) - Really good. At the beginning I didn’t love it, but then it got way better and funnier. It had lots of famous people that I had no idea were in it. The Elvis Presley and Beatles scenes I especially loved. (8/10)

reply

It makes me laugh when you say you “didn’t want to like it” and to read all your failed expectations. Don’t change your reviewing style. It’s is you, it is unique. Now, you delivered some good stuff this week!

Top gun Maverick: 7/10

House of flying daggers: In my top 100. 10/10

Hero: agreed. 7/10

So I married an axe murderer: 6/10

Gozu: this was my first Takashi McKay experience, can believe that!? Lol it was about 11 years ago. Saw over 30 of his movies since. 7.5/10

Black hawk down: 8.5/10

EuroTrip: very funny. 7.5/10

Spiderhead: I actually wanted to like it but hated it. 4/10

Walk hard: very funny 7.5/10

Movies

-The Last Seduction (1994)
Didn't like this one at all. It tried too hard at being quirky and asking sympathy for the extremely unlikeable main character. Also pretty boring.

-Hideaway (1995)
This was some weird ass movie. A sort of sci-fi horror thriller with bad CGI and without any suspense or scariness. Jeff Goldblum couldn't save the movie either.

TV Series.

-The Cosby Mysteries - Episodes 18+19
And those were the last episodes. I didn't think this was a very good show. It was rather slow and the concept was kind of all over the place

-Monk - marathon

-The Bold and the Beautiful - marathon of very old episodes

I haven’t seen yours but I might have to watch hideaway someday as I’m on a quest to watch all the movies released in 1995
