Boromir's guess the famous game #254 [Tuco Benedicto Pacifico Juan Maria Ramirez is the famous character - cyberbob wins!]

1. I'm thinking of some famous figure, it can be a philosopher, politician, entertainer, scientist, fictional character, criminal, animal, being, etc.
2. You need to ask me a yes or no question about this person, for example, "Is the person still alive?," "Does the person work in the entertainment industry?," any question you can think of that helps you to reveal the answer. The host answers with yes or no only.
3. Maximum 1 question and 2 guesses per player per answer.
4. The winner can either start a new game or say "pass." In case of a pass, the OP gets to start another.
5. Can't edit a question or guess once posted. Delete ONLY.

Well, an honorary Oscar. To be honest, I was afraid of that potentially being an issue, after the previous round where honorary Oscars were also a problem. When I was asked if he was an Oscar winner, I debated with myself how to respond. I had to make a judgment call. So I said yes. If it's caused confusion, I apologize. I feared it might.

reply

it's just a lifetime achievement award.

reply

So was Myrna Loy's, but it seemed to be decided on that round that it was acceptable to call her an Oscar-winner, as Carrot did. So I used that precedent to tip the balance on my judgment call.

reply

A honorary award is not a "win"

Need to phrase it differently IMO

reply

I don't necessarily disagree. It's a gray area at best. For that reason I gave serious thought to whether I should answer yes when somebody asked if my mystery character was portrayed by an Oscar-winner.

Perhaps we should all come to an agreement for future reference on what to do if honorary Oscars come up again.

reply

See hownos response below about StoneKeeper's.

reply

lifetime achievement award - the Academy's way of saying...that they've had enough, and it's over.

reply

i thought this was clear in stonekeeper's game. no one considers alfred hitchcock an oscar winner. he was a nominee.

reply

I don't remember that ever coming up over there. I'm not trying to dispute it though. I was asked a question and had to give an answer. So I gave an answer, which I thought had reasonably good grounds due to the Myrna Loy round, in which we generally seemed to find a similar thing acceptable at the time (albeit not without a hint of grumbling). But I also felt I might be wrong and it might mess things up for one or more of the players. It seems that did happen, for which I genuinely apologize.

I'm definitely open to having us all come to an agreement standardizing how we handle such questions in the future, including if it contradicts the way I handled it this round.

reply

I remember, I think LauraGrace, in Boromir's game, responded to Oscar Winner question by writing, "Received One." The problem with that is it made it obvious it was an honorary one which dramatically narrowed the choices (made it too easy)

"The problem with that is it made it obvious it was an honorary one which dramatically narrowed the choices (made it too easy)"

Yeah that's another thing I was a bit concerned about when I was debating what answer to give here.

reply

we all decided that honorary oscars don't count as oscar winners. that was decided years ago on stonekeeper's game. imdb doesn't consider them oscar winners.

reply

YES. I say that here in Boromir's that honorary oscars don't count as oscar winners.

reply

I'll go with what the majority decides.

I'll only say in my defense that, as far as I can remember, I wasn't present when this was decided in StoneKeeper's game, so I didn't know such an agreement had been made there.

reply

One thing that makes it easier is that IMDb doesn't consider an honorary one a win.

See Cary Grant front page. It says nominated, not won (he has an honorary one)
