FAVORITE DAVID LYNCH FILM/STORY

What's you favorite LYNCH FILM or story???

Why do you like it better than his other stories???

reply

The Elephant Man.

I was only 12 years old and I was totally enthralled with this movie. I saw it on HBO or one of the other pay channels back in the early 80s.

It made me appreciate watching a movie as an art form and made me interested in things such as script and cinematography.

I have never watched any movie the same since viewing The Elephant Man.

Excellent choice diez.

Have you also seen THE STRAIGHT STORY???

Perhaps these 2 films are probably also the easiest films that LYNCH made to comprehend (due to the way they aren't as SURREALISTIC as his other films tend to be)???

And have you seen the other film called "MASK" where it also deals with a character who has the same condition as the ELEPHANT MAN had???

The character in that story falls in love with a BLIND GIRL who has no clue what he looks like.

Mulholland Dr. is my favourite Lynch films. I think it is his most entertaining and interesting film with strong performances and a great screenplay.

What's your impression of what's happening in MD???

Many people view the FIRST PART of it as a DREAM STATE, and the 2ND PART of it (after RITA OPENS the BLUE BOX ) as the REALITY part of it.

But since ADAM is the same character in BOTH PARTS of it (because his NAME doesn't CHANGE), I disagree with that kind of an interpretation of it.

And since the girl who sings the EVERY LITTLE STAR SONG is also named CAMILLA ROSE, what I suspect is RITA assumes her NAME and her IDENTITY after they find her CORPSE.

And of course the MOB MEN at the AUDITION also forced ADAM to choose THAT already GIRL for the leading role in his film, which also means those MOB MEN would probably also be wanting to PUNISH RITA for pretending to be the girl they chose to be in the film (hence the reason why they may have also hired the HIT MEN who might have tired to kill her in the LIMO on MULHOLLAND DRIVE).

(possible spoilers) It's been a while since I watched it, but my initial impression was that the first part was a dream. I need to see it again before I can commit to that interpretation or see if my interpretation changes.

Well since the girl singing on the AUDITION TAPE is named CAMILLA, and RITA chose that name (and she also chose to wear the BLOND WIG so that she'd look like her), I'm thinking BOTH PARTS of the story were REAL.

Plus Betty (NAOMI's character) also chose to use DIANE (which is the name of the WAITRESS at the WIKI's DINER).

But ADAM's name still stays the same which indicates to me the reason why both parts of the story really happened.

And the reason why we assume it's just a DREAM is due to the UNREALITY of the FILM INDUSTRY itself (which is also WHAT the story is about).

LYNCH also admits this in an interview, that both MD and IE were films ABOUT the FILM INDUSTRY (the same way as ERASERHEAD was a story about FACTORIES and those INDUSTRIES).

So basically ERASERHEAD (his FIRST FILM) deals with POLLUTION and the CORRUPTION caused by one INDUSTRY, and MD and IE deal with the CORRUPTIONS that can be caused by the FILM INDUSTRY.

And the scenes where the MOB MEN BULLY ADAM (the DIRECTOR in MD) also illustrate the way that LYNCH himself felt he'd been BULLIED by others who had creative control over DUNE.

Have you seen TWIN PEAKS: THE RETURN???

If so, did you like it???

What's your impression of what happens at the end of it when Agent COOPER finds the other LAURA PALMER (named CARRIE) living in the other town in another state where she also worked at that other diner there???

And why was there also a dead body sitting inside of her place when COOP finds her there at home?

What's interesting is how Laura's name is changed to CARRIE and COOP's is changed to RICHARD (for Diane) who also has a name change. And that's also the same kind of thing that happens in LOST HWY, MULHOLLAND DRIVE, and INLAND EMPIRE (where other LYNCH characters also have name and IDENTITY changes).

My favorite scene in "THE RETURN" was also when we see COOP floating like a BIRD inside of that SEE THROUGH GLASS BOX with the entrance that makes it look like a GIANT BIRD CAGE.

And then we also see JUDY (or whatever that creature was) appear inside of it and PECK that other couple to death.

Those WOODSMAN that show up after the ATOMIC explosion goes off were also pretty CREEPY as well.

What's your impression of the scene where we hear the song about the "CANDY COLORED CLOWN???"

I'm thinking FRANK's mother use to be a HOOKER and that's why she looked like a CLOWN to him when she came in to KISS HIM goodnight. And something must also have also happened to her that she never came home again.

SONG LYRICS:

A candy-colored clown they call the sandman
Tiptoes to my room every night
Just to sprinkle stardust and to whisper
Go to sleep, everything is alright

I close my eyes then I drift away
Into the magic night, I softly say
A silent prayer like dreamers do
Then I fall asleep to dream my dreams of you

In dreams I walk with you
In dreams I talk to you
In dreams you're mine all of the time
We're together in dreams, in dreams

But just before the dawn
I awake and find you gone
I can't help it
I can't help it
If I cry
I remember that you said goodbye

It's too bad that all these things
Can only happen in my dreams
Only in dreams
In beautiful dreams

And his mother probably also use to wear a BLUE VELVET ROBE (like DORTHY does) which would also help to explain that other weird scene in the film.
