Times A Movie Character's Fate Was Worse Than Death

I recently watched The Skeleton Key with Kate Hudson for the second time (recommended for horror fans) and the ending actually affected me more this time around than it did during my first viewing. The first time I was just surprised by the twist. But while watching it again, knowing what would ultimately happen, it occurred to me that the fate of Kate's character Caroline was worse than death. I'm wondering, what are some movie characters who, in your opinion, have a fate worse than outright death?

Some I can think of, besides Caroline, are:

David from The Mist (2007)
Wallace from Tusk (2014)
Anna from Martyrs (2008)
Wade from House of Wax (2005) - He does eventually die, but it's incredibly slow and cruel.

I didn't feel like reading every comment and I apologize if it was mentioned. But Red Skull in the MCU movies turning out to have been chosen to be the guardian of the Soul Stone. Which means for more than 70 years he was trapped on that wasteland of a planet, standing there, guarding a treasure he wants but that he can't have. That truly is a fate worse than death.

Sean Bean in The Dark (2005).

****SPOILER****

It's a grim British film along the lines of Insidious but with a darker ending.

I just looked it up. I'll add it to my watch list.

It's very bleak, but it's well told and acted. Hope you enjoy it.

I would say The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957) but the ending narration is actually a bit upbeat.
