StoneKeeper's Super Awesome Movie Guessing Game: I recommend THIS Movie #1073 [Tokyo Chorus (1931), guessed by MonStar]

I have a movie in mind and you have to guess which one it is. For each movie you guess, I will give a hint that connects your guess with the movie I have in mind.

Example of connections: Actor, length, genre, aspect ratio, language, country, year, director, writer in common, rating, number of votes, nominations. It can even be something like: both movies involve Cabbage Patch Kids.

Helpful search engine: https://www.imdb.com/search/title/

- The winner can either start a new game or say "pass". In case of a pass, the OP gets to start another one.
- After 12 hints and 13 guesses, the point goes to the OP and he/she gets to start another one.
- Movie must have at least 3500 votes. Otherwise, add a bonus hint.
- Maximum 2 guesses per player per hint.

Bonus hint: Under 3500 votes.
Hint 1: Ochazuke no aji (1952) - Black and white.

Hint 3: Woman in the Moon (1929) - Silent movie.
Hint 4: Old and New (1929) - Drama genre.
Hint 5: Piccadilly (1929) - Between 1,000 and 1,500 votes on IMDb.
Hint 6: Cowards Bend the Knee (2003) - Audience score of at least 80% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Hint 7: Lucky Star (1929) - Director passed away in the 1960s.
Hint 8: The Parson's Widow (1920) - Comedy genre.

MonStar wins with Tokyo Chorus (1931), a lesser-known gem from the great Japanese director Ozu Yasujiro. It's about a hapless salaryman who struggles to find a way to provide for his family in Depression-era Tokyo. Sounds serious, I know, but it balances seriousness with humor and parts of it are quite funny too. Highly recommended.

I'm surprised so few people are playing this one. It's really not that difficult of a round. Especially since Fred narrowed it down so much in just the first few guesses.

reply

My phone is blowing up. But I'm lurking.

reply

It may depend on the time zone for the regular players. Maybe they're out protesting or giving coffee to the police.

We have a winner!

This was a fun round. Your own unique tastes to the game makes it even more special. It's always good to see you, Kawa!

reply

I'm glad you think so! And it's good to see you too, twinA. :)

reply

Outstanding round after I'd already guessed an Ozu movie. What a silly goose chase!

reply

Lol yeah, your first guess hit SO close to the mark that I was conflicted as to what hint I should use. Should I come out and say it's an Ozu? Nah, that would make it too easy... Should I say it's from Japan? Well, if I do, might be everybody would spend the whole game guessing movies from the 21st century and I wouldn't find a way to push them back to the silent era. I decided to go with the movie being black and white, since that would skew it heavily toward the early to mid 20th century.

reply

Ingenious. I wish I'd thought of that.

reply

You have certainly come on to the scene. Great entrance and like your profile picture, haha! Fred gave us a run for our money.

I looked at Letterboxd yesterday and two people already have variations of my user name.

Is it too late to start a new Game? There may only be 3 or 4 people.

reply

I won't be able to join since it's pretty darn late where I'm at.

For Letterboxd maybe you can call yourself MonRockStar or something like it.

reply

I should wait until tomorrow to start one, if there are only 2 likely players.

Is there a way to do a Search on this site, to see if a movie has been used in this game before? Or is there a list posted here, or on Letterboxd or some site?

There is a small Blog section on MovieChat with a handful of posts. If a list of past Stonekeeper Guessing Game titles were on one, anyone could check. If it were maintained in alphabetical order, it would be easy to check.

Nyctc7 recently posted a list of the first thousand movies used in the games:

As for likely players, well, me and Fred are both online, and Laura is too although she's only lurking for the moment. There might be others online who simply didn't participate in mine because I seem to have acquired a reputation for difficult rounds with under-3500 movies.

reply

You're games are challenging, but that's the fun. Whats the point of picking something easy. I'm going to work on picking trickier movies:)
