Is chili best made with diced tomatoes or tomato sauce?

I use diced tomato and tomato paste, which here in Australia is less sweet and has a thicker consistency than tomato sauce (which is our term for ketchup).

My chili is world famous in my house.

Diced tomatoes (not drained) and tomato paste. Also a heaping handful of roasted jalapenos, serrano or other chili peppers.

I don't like chunks of tomato in my chili so I will either use tomato sauce or puree the tomatoes before adding them. Not saying it's right or wrong, that's just my preference.

Petite diced tomatoes work the best. You still get tomatoes, but not huge honkin chonks of tomato.
