shareFleetwood Mac isn't relevant now. They would have wallowed in obscurity to current generations if Stevie Nicks wasn't a gay icon and heavily promoted by Ryan Murphy. Don't get me wrong, Stevie Nicks is awesome, I love their music, but that doesn't translate to relevancy and the band was great because of Stevie Nicks. AC/DC made good music, not just good songs, and their music will be remembered 100 years from now. Don't believe me, go quiz 100 high school kids about those 2 bands and see which one has the most recognition among 16-18 year olds.

shareThe opposite of passion, reason. I can articulate an opinion because I've given it thought. Whether we agree or disagree is irrelevant, everyone agrees and disagrees. An unsupported opinion has no value and is the path to superstition.

I don't dislike Ac/DC, and Fleetwood mac is not my favorite band. Perhaps I'm just not personally invested enough. Articulating my opinions is not my strong suit either. I could list some of their most iconic songs and then you would do the same.

You made a good point, that passion and reason aren't mutually exclusive. Most posts here go unremarked so I'm a lazy poster and sometimes don't phrase things as well as I could.
shareI try to make a point of answering every text I get. If I don't answer it's because either the conversation has basically ended, it's snarky or insulting, or I just spaced out and missed it.
The length of my posts depends on my knowledge mostly, my passion ;), or, well... a good buzz honestly.

shareIt's about process. Forming opinions based on substance and reasoning as opposed to snap judgements or feelings. For example, I know a person who believes Native Americans could cure any disease. What is this based on? Nothing. Native Americans die just everyone else. It's an emotional opinion based on that person's affinity toward a group of people. Or people who declare such and such movie sucks because they didn't like it. Well movies don't suck because we don't like them, they suck because they are objectively flawed. Or voting for politicians because of what they promise rather than their voting record or personal history. Lots of examples. If a person reasons themselves into a wrong opinion, they can be reasoned out of it; but if it's an emotional opinion or tied to marketing, propaganda, or group identity then it can't be changed rationally. The more unreasoned opinions you have, the more likely you are to believe unconventional or absurd things, like that vaccines cause autism, which is a belief held by the person mentioned above that believes Native Americans could cure any disease.

Earlier yesterday I was listening to a podcast about Descartes, also touched on early Greek philosophers and a poet named Lucretius, but the gist of a much of it was being careful that one's opinions are based on reasoning. That even if your opinion turns out to be wrong, or the reasoning flawed, you still have a process through which the reasoning or opinion could be corrected. If through a (flawed) process of observation and reasoning I decide the world is flat, I can be shown evidence of the flaw in my reasoning and can adopt a new opinion. If I choose to believe the world is flat because my girlfriend told me so and she's pretty then I'm likely to adopt a lot of stupid and arbitrary opinions because I have no rational process for making sound decisions. I'm way off topic so I'm going to shut up about it.
shareOff topic or not, and I'm not sure that you are, your reasoning is sound. Opinion based on reason is demonstrable and therefore sound. Opinion based on emotion, while passionate, is flawed and destined, ultimately, to result in dispute and failure.
