Favorite Directors When You Were 18 Years Old?

Kubrick
Lynch
Coppola
Scorsese
Tarantino

Kubrick is the only one who would make my Top 30-50 nowadays. I've seen so much more since "I learned the truth at seventeen" (once I first got serious about movies).

I guess its like sex. In the beginning, a pretty girl is enough for it to be a fun experience, until you keep finding better ones, until one day you think its more fun to watch a great B&w Hungarian movie from the 60s than it is to have sex.

Hal Ashby, too.

I guess Tarantino. At that time he had only directed Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown. Perfect record.

reply

Same here. Great films, plus being caught up in the 90s hype about him as a teenager.

Spielberg was probably my favourite at that age, and he doesn't really trouble my favourites list these days. To be honest though, even though I've always loved movies I probably didn't care too much about directors as a teenager, it wasn't until my early 20's that my interest became a passion and I really started to seriously look at any director's body of work..

The funniest thing about your post is hearing that Tarantino had directed a film when you were 18. I thought you were older. It makes me feel pretty ancient.

reply

I'm in my 30s.. I was actually a child when he first started directing.

reply

I don't think I cared all that much about directors when I was 18 nor do I now really. I knew John Ford made good Western's though and Clint Eastwood had a tendency to under light. I also liked George Lucas, this being before he started destroying Star Wars.

reply

Tarantino and Leone. I also fancied Rodriguez before I was 18.

Like many people, I wasn't too interested in directors as a teen. But I'd have to say the films that stuck with me were usually directed by Chris Columbus, Barry Levinson and maybe Wes Craven. Maybe sprinkled in with a little John Hughes and Steven Spielberg.

David Fincher
John Carpenter
James Cameron
Ridley Scott
Tony Scott
