Stonekeeper's Summer Game:I recommend this Mystery Movie # 469

So you guys like to play games? Here is an investigation game that can be time consuming but it's lots of fun. Basically, I have a movie in mind and you have to guess which one it is. For each movie you guys are going to guess, I will give a hint that CONNECTS your guess with the movie I have in mind.

Example of connections: Actor, length, genre, aspect ratio, language, country, year, director, writer in common, rating, number of votes, nominations. It can even be something like: both movies involve a love triangle.

- The winner can either start a new game or say "pass". In case of a pass, the OP gets to start another one.
- After 12 hints, the point goes to the OP and he/she gets to start another one.
- Movie must have at least 3500 votes. Otherwise, add a Bonus Hint.

under 3500 votes

Hint 1 - The Young Savages (1961) black and white
Hint 2 - Radioland Murders (1994) male director
Hint 3 - Whirlpool (1949) over 1 hr 37 min
Hint 4 - Ride the Pink Horse (1947) imdb rating in the 7's
Hint 5 - Stanley and Livingstone (1939) over 1000 votes
Hint 6 - Boom Town (1940) Oscar nominee
Hint 7 - Edison, the Man (1940) Biography genre in common
Hint 8 - Dr. Ehrlich's Magic Bullet (1940) over 1300 votes
Hint 9 - Freud (1962) it's about a man
Hint 10 - The King of Kings (1927) over 1500 votes
Hint 11 - Story of G.I. Joe (1945) imdb rating above 7.3
Hint 12 - Gentleman Jim (1942) California is a filming location
Hint 13 - The Sullivans (1944) over 1 hr and 51 mins

Let's Get Lost (1988) is the film.(What an appropriate title for this round!)
Documentary on the life of jazz trumpeter-singer and heroin addict Chet Baker. Fascinating series of interviews with friends, family, associates and lovers, interspersed with film from Baker's earlier life and some modern-day performances. In a sad but fitting twist, "The James Dean of Jazz" died before the doc was released. And there's been some renewed interest ever since Documentary Now! did their send up a few months ago.

Kudos to LauraGrace for her recalibration deep into Day 2 of this game. I've decided to give her the point despite StoneKeeper closing the game a few hours before she got it.

The Sullivans (1944)?

reply

think I just figured it out, it's a documentary https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095515/?ref_=adv_li_tt

reply

I knew you'd get it.

So sorry that StoneKeeper closed the game. :)

reply

great game! But now you're tasked with hosting another!

reply

You ruined my next move.

I was going to edit this into the hints and see if anyone noticed and ran with it to the finish.

For hanging in there, I've given you the point and the reins.

reply

I wouldn't have gotten that one with a hundred clues. 🤯

reply

Fred's "handful of possibilities" sent you further down the wrong road.

None of them passed all the hints already given.

The answer is the one and only film that fit.

But I thought Laura would be the favorite from the start. As long as I've been involved, she's been more doc inclined as both a host and a player.

reply

Ah, yes, the old documentary misdirect. Cheap and sneaky. I support Laura getting the point.

reply

Phew. Thank goodness! I was so worried you wouldnt support the idea. You were the key in my decision making process. "Give Laura the point? But will Fred support this?!?"

But cheap and sneaky??

Someone expressed a different sentiment when I asked about other options such as animated films. In fact, this person brought up docs when I didnt even ask!

Can you guess who this person is? Can you guess what he said?

And that was also when you changed a key hint deep into a long slog of a game -- but didnt say a word until I did. Good thing I caught the switch in real time.

Now that's sneaky.

Also, I see no such label applied when LauraGrace hosted doc games. You were there. You played. It turned out to be a doc.

Where's the swipe? Hmmm... A bit inconsistent, huh?

You misdirected yourself. I telegraphed my thinned herd and possible ventures into other types. YOU brought up docs to me as a valid option. I just played a doc the other day. I guessed a doc and won a few days before that. You just made an assumption and excluded them. Notice Laura's assessment of this game vs. yours. No whining from her b/c there's nothing to whine about.

No ill-will intended, just playfully busting your chops. Truly sorry if I struck a chord. I'm all for documentaries, and yours is a fine pick.

If I might offer any thoughts on the matter, perhaps look into varying try to vary your hints in the future. I understand that certain guesses leave little latitude, but three times hinting "over X votes" seems more like moving the goalpost than providing useful clues. And maybe instead of "It's about a man," we might be able to better decipher "It's about a man who was widely regarded as a trailblazer in his field," or whatever might be appropriate.

Again, apologies for anything that came off as abrasive. We're all tweaking and improving the system here, and your contributions are definitely welcome. :-)

I dont see how a clue -- other than saying "Guys, it might be a doc" -- would've helped in this case. I always search using the same clues I'm handing out. Before you even reach the 2nd number of votes clue or "It's about a man" you were already down to only 17 applicable titles (including this one and only doc) That leaves 5 more hints and 6 guesses left to chop that small total down. By design the 12th hint left the one and only answer. Clues were not the problem. And the goalpost cant be moved. It's always fixed. My clues shortened and shortened the distance to a chip shot. Dismissing docs early on just made the goalpost seem invisible to you. If I may offer some advice, you might want to be less hasty with exclusion early on. That film should've been in the initial wide net. And no clue from that point on should've pushed it out of that net. I'm guessing it was the "black and white" first hint that sent everyone down the much older movie highway. LauraGrace finally pulled over and checked her premises. I did the same thing when Laura put up Gimme Shelter. Luckily, I caught my error a little earlier in the game. I was thinking she must've goofed but her clues were just fine. It was me. I didnt capture docs initially. No excuses. Once I did, game over. Just like Laura today.
