Volunteer

Were you ever a volunteer?

Several years ago I volunteered at the local VA rehab center, playing piano for the vets who were recovering from injuries. I loved doing this but it began to sadden me when a lot of the vets passed away. Still, it was one of the highlights of those years.

i was turfed from my job a little over three years ago (i was happy to be done with it), and was given a reasonable severance, plus i was able to collect benefits for a good length of time, so i decided to volunteer more or less full time at a local homeless shelter. i found it very enjoyable & extremely rewarding, so much so that i ended up staying there as a volunteer for the past three years - i'm lucky enough to not really have to worry about money too much - and would have stayed on, but they actually offered my a job in their finance group, and i really couldn't say no, since they gave me a good deal of flexibility.

I volunteer at a few different places throughout the year. Animal shelter, women's shelter, and some fun places like an historical museum, and our local Fringe Theatre festival.

I volunteered at a center that gave grocery's and clothes to the indigent and also a group that took residents of nursing homes out to lunch or outside excursions.
I moved to a different town and was thinking about the homeless shelter or animal shelter but have been kind of worried about getting too attached at the animal shelter. I'd want to bring them all home, I fear.

I volunteered at the local high school for several years. I helped with the marching band program. I started when my daughter was a member, but I enjoyed it so much that I stayed on even after she graduated - the need was so great that I couldn't bear to leave when she did. I finally gave it up when I moved out of the area.
