Is Hollywood too white?

I don't know exactly how white Hollywood is. America is about 65% white right now, but it was 90% white as recently as 1965, so I would expect some lag when looking at a field of people at the top of their game. Blacks at a consistent 13% of the population seem to be overrepresented. It's probably Hispanics who should fill the gap, not blacks, and Hispanics are usually technically white. But I can certainly see why people would think Hollywood is too white, if it's in reguard to that.

I don't think that's the case though. People don't usually say there aren't enough Hispanics. They always say it in reverse, that there are too many whites, a sentiment driven by hatred of whites rather than compassion for Hispanics. Usually the complaint is made when a black person loses an award or something.

It almost seems deliberate that the issue of Hispanics is being avoided, like Hollywood doesn't want to scare conservatives. America's demographics are changing rapidly, and studies show that people are not aware of this, and that it makes them afraid to think about. In fact white liberals are just as likely as white conservatives in these studies to turn against welfare when informed about democraphic change. I think Hollywood is waiting for Republicans to become demographically unelectable. Then it will be safe.

People have a lot of hangups about these issues. We're talking about a few percentage points difference in representation. For some of us it just feels great to kill whitey. But what about Jewish overrepresentation? Jews are only 2% of the population, and probably at least half of Hollywood, especially at the top. If we even notice this, we get attacked for antisemitism. It's the complete opposite reaction. Sometimes the slightly higher IQ person might try to make the point that Jews created Hollywood. "Of course they run it. So what? They deserve it". Wrong again. All you have to do is point out that it's Jewish men. So we're supposed to exclude women now? This makes it morally right? Of course not. It's just that social justice has us constantly stepping on each other's toes and we can't keep our intersectional privlidges straight.

Hollywood isn't white enough.

I don’t know about Hollywood, but moviechat definitely is!

What would you recommend? A quota system?

Maybe you could balance it out my insisting on a greater white presence at The Root.

Ok bob. OH-KAY BOB!😂

"To find out who truly controls you, find the only group you can't criticize"

You know, most Semites are Arab and none of them can make it into movies (hmm, wonder why).

The hypocrisy of it all is that Arabs or Muslims are the only group anyone can talk shit about, including the President. But the minute they defend themselves, they go nuts 24/7. Notice AOC (woman), Omar (black woman), Talib (brown woman)... Hispanic, Sudanese, and Palestinian.

Has ANYONE ever heard someone call an anti-Arab an "anti-semite"?. It's usually a term for dumb and lazy people who can't engage with truth.

reply

You know as well as I do that the term 'anti-Semite' has evolved and primarily refers to any form of prejudice towards people of a Jewish identity, whether that identity is ethnic, religious or cultural.

A Mexican has won the best director Oscar four out of the last five years. Dey're takin' our jerbs!

I'm a white Hispanic. I wouldn't mind seeing a greater presence of my peeps in Hollywood.

As for Jews, you're right in theory about Hollywood, along with some other high profile industries, being disproportionately represented by white, and mostly Ashkenazi, Jews. If one were to say 'we need to focus on reducing the representation of white people in Hollywood, but without hurting the representation of (white) Jews' it would mean that white gentiles were disproportionately hit. But I suppose the logic is that although they are white, and although they tend, on balance, to be socioeconomically better off proportional to their numbers in society, Jewish people have constantly been the target of systemic oppression and persecution, often on the part of state entities and governments, and so their 'privilege' relative to other racial and ethnic groups comes with a very significant caveat. The dynamics and nature of the oppression may be different, even relatively or seemingly dormant at times, to that of POC, Muslims and Hispanics, in addition to women, the LGBTQ community and the disabled, but it still exists and it's very pervasive, and so one can't truly apply the same logic to white privilege and over-representation to Jewish people.

Suffice to say it's very complicated and much of it relates to various intersectional privileges rather than simple black and white (literal and figurative) dynamics.

To me, there is no such thing as too white, too black, too Asian, too male, too female and so on. Sometimes things are the way they are because they just are.

Nurses are mostly women. Plumbers are mostly men. Basketball players are mostly black. Hockey players are mostly white. If a country is mostly liberal or conservative, do people call for more diversity of thought?

reply

Too many women of color in Hollywood if you ask me, I can’t see a single movie these days without a token black chick somehow being friends with a group a white women. How many groups of white chicks have 1 black female friend in their clique? It’s gotta be like 0.00001%....sooooo unrealistic.

reply

It’s not unrealistic, just depends on where you live. I don’t know how the black chick would feel about being called a “token” though. Next time you see a black girl hanging with some white chicks you should call her token and see what happens. Ya know, like an experiment!

reply

White people tend to hang out with other whites, blacks hang out with other blacks, asains with Asians, and so on and so forth.

The forced diversity and inclusion in Hollywood movies is so consistent and unrealistic that I find it distracting.

I was annoyed by the token white guy in Black Panther who has no business being in Wakanda so I don’t mean to single out black sistas. It just so happens that Hollywood prefers for black females to get the throwaway token roles so they meet the diversity quota.
