You say you think it was made during the 1970s. Do you recall if it is a period piece or depicting a certain era or decade, or was it "modern" for the times?
By patterns, do you mean wallpaper, clothing, televison off-air pattern -- did she react to anything specific that you recall?
Do you remember any more details? Sometimes even the smallest detail can help in identifying sonething like this. What she was wearing or what anyone else was wearing, her hairstyle, furniture style, colors, etc.
Also, what country are you from (so we know where to sleuth) and did you watch it on televison or via a device such as your phone, Roku, cable TV, Netflix?

It looks like [spoiler]that while patterns are a part of the script, it has more to do with catatonic patients' reactions to them and the patterns -- or lack of pattern -- helping them in some instances. I don't see anything about a patient speaking and stating that the patterns were disturbing and causing the patient to have hallucinations in the patterns. [/spoiler] I could have missed it though, as I haven't seen this movie.
It's not Awakenings, but that is a great film. Very moving and wonderful performances by both Robert DeNiro and Robin Williams.
