Bored with the MCU

This quote from director John Landis perfectly articulates the issue I've had the films of the MCU for a while now, probably since about the time Captain America: The Winter Soldier came out and I was struggling to see what the fuss was all about.

“I’m just… truthfully, I’m bored sh*tless with the Marvel Universe now. All the superhero movies tend to be interchangeable, you always have these mass destruction of cities and huge computer-generated extravaganzas to the point where you could take a reel from any of the Marvel superhero movies and put it any of the others and nobody would notice. They’re very well-made, it’s just they’re the same thing over and over again."

I was surprised when I had a good look through the MCU films the other day and realized I really only like a small few. Iron Man, Captain America: The First Avenger, Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man. The only upcoming MCU film I'm excited about is Captain Marvel because it will be their first female led superhero movies after 20 films. I'm also cautiously optimistic about Ant-Man & the Wasp.

Anyone else feel the same?

reply

Nah, not same here... I don't feel excited to all and any of them.

reply

No...i don't care so much anymore, except for the new Tomb Raider movie😉

reply

I've warmed to them on repeated viewings. Initially, I didn't care much for Winter Soldier, Ultron or Civil War, but they've grown on me. In contrast, Batman vs Superman and The Force Awakens still suck in my book after repeating. I even bought the extended version of BvS hoping I would like it better. Didn't work.

Did you watch "Legion" on FX? It was excellent imho.

PS MissMargoChanning mentioned that you had floated the idea of a Movie Discussion Group here on the GB. We have one called ATM (At The Movies - a nod to the old Siskel and Ebert show) on the Videos Board. Would you be interested in joining?

Yeah... it's absolutely true. (Disney's) Marvel doesn't take chances, and it gets a little stale, but the movies are still pretty fun. I loved Spider-Man: Homecoming, for the most part. I really, really, really HATED how they paid no attention to the timeline and continuity of the series, but the rest of it was fun.

reply

They're fun movies for sure but very shallow. Not movies I'd watch again. I just read that Captain Marvel will take place before Iron Man, in the timeline, which makes me even more excited for it since they will not flood it with unnecessary cameos from the Avengers and it will be able to stand on its own as solo story.
