We are each contributing to how the site evolves. If suggestions such as children might be reading the site are posed as an argument for banning conversation judged to be too adult and Jim goes with it then there's not much we can do besides start up our own alternative which allows for these kinds of conversations.

I would suggest though that if children might read this site then blind people, dyslexic people, people who don't speak English and all the other varieties of people should be cater for in the same manner. It could be the most wonderfully inclusive website the world has ever beheld. Granted there would be nobody on it but on the chance that someone did post - at least everyone could understand what it being said and not feel offended or threatened by it.

They could always just use tumblr instead I suppose, that already exists for exactly those purposes and the rest of us could use here.

reply

I doubt many would want to hang out here if we can't be adults.
Why have 50 Shades of Grey on a site, if the fans have to speak in codes:
"I liked it when Grey did bad words to so n so" (I've obviously never seen the movie but I used it as an example because it's widely known)

reply

The problem we have here are so many entitled princesses thinking they can shove their interpretation of the world down everyone else's throats as if they are doing a moral favor for everyone. Someone was offended because I said the word cunt. OK, I get it but where I'm from that's a perfectly find word used by a vast majority of people in friendly situations. They then go on to use racial slurs referring to spades and don't see that, in my world view, I find that completely wrong.

The bottom line is I'm prepared to let our differences slide, they would rather impose colonial rule over the domain which is my means to express myself.

And of course it will be marched in line with "Think of the children" because goodness knows we should ask the children what they want? Let's just suppose on their behalf and take away their agency to discover conversations which aren't approved by the Minister for Thought.

reply

If Jim wanted bad words banned..he'd beep them out.
But what about 'nasty' topics? Some movies are nasty and people want to comment on it.

reply

Sounds good in theory but I don't see how it could be enforced.

reply

Just to alert others that subject matters might be inappropriate.

reply

This whole debate is ridiculous!

-Waah, they said a bad word!
- But, waah, I wanna use the bad word!

It's great that you're an adult. But with great adulting, also comes great responsibility. One of them is being considered to others. Another one is taking into account the context in which vulgar language is used. Not being able to use profanity won't greatly impede anyones ability to express their opinion. But also people need to accept that sometimes profanity will be used. Adults compromise, Goddamnit!

reply

^^ *applause* What do we have here in your above post? Common sense? Say it ain't so! ;)

"Adults compromise"

That's why I suggested a fix.
some are flipping out over "no no words".

reply

@CactusPants

You swear using profane words. I suppose it's something to be proud of....

Apparently you & Wilson missed my suggestion of the site having a profanity filter which can be turned OFF for those of you that are absolutely unable to converse without profanity. I in turn can turn ON the filter to bleep out the profanity. And, please you all, I'm not trying to control you. You can do/speak/write anyway/anyhow you choose. My choice is not to follow suit which would consist of "bleep" or ignore. Not ban!

reply

That seems perfectly reasonable to me I just didn't respond before because I was certain you said you had me on ignore.

That you don't is fine, I just didn't want to reply and give you a feeling of harassment like I got from your friend Catbookss when they chased me around the boards replying to all my threads with their same vacuous sense of moral superiority in their replies.

That is someone I'd be sexist for by holding open the door to let them out.

I'd even say one has to opt in for the profanity, have it family friendly by default.

reply

@Wilson

As per you:"I'd even say one has to opt in for the profanity, have it family friendly by default."

I like your idea even better, but was fearful to suggest it. Too controlling some would say. We must not infringe on free speech. "I am woman/man! Hear me roar profanities!"

reply

No no words ahead, warning:

Do you get offended if someone says "effing", "bytch" or "shyt".

People will still find ways to cuss even if the site becomes family friendly.

reply

@CactusPants

If you're replying to me....if not....just throw me aside!

As to your query of do I get offended if someone says "f-ing". Yes, most certainly! If it's a conversation between just the two of us, I politely ask him/her not to use that word. If in a group of mixed company, I quietly make an excuse (potty break) and exit. I don't wish to embarrass the person. I don't need to as they've embarrassed themselves by using the foul language.

reply

Personally I don't care for profanities but I hate being told I cannot use them when the films we watch and discuss here use them often. It seems a little off kilter to be censored in discussing something which is obviously pushing back against censorship within its artistry - particularly when there are no rules in place to point to when queried.

I think, like the ignore feature, personalizing settings per user to have the experience which is best for them without infringing upon the experience of others is the best way forward. I could link to a bunch of Chrome and Firefox tools which would get rid of profanities for example but that would require users informing themselves and most people these days are far too privileged to feel the need to pick up a book or engage in discussion with people outside of their safe space(s) and so Jim and the gang have to do all the heavy lifting for them or else they'll threaten to leave (Again) *Handbags held to the chin with mouth aghast*

reply

I may cuss in the politics area, I may say a naughty word in a movie comment, I may have an off day.

But if someone makes a cupcake thread, I'm not busting in like "I like effing cupcakes, you dirty bytches".
I'm not cussing up a storm for no reason. I can still have a cussfree conversation.

reply

I find your posting style to be similar to mine CactusPants in that when the situation calls for it you'll rise (Or dive) to the occasion. It is the prissy princesses that are trying to feign outrage that words exist which make them feel triggered. Who gives a rat's arse about triggering if you are openly, and by your own volition, prancing into a conversation about cinema with strangers?

That all said, if an 18+ section ever does open around here I am so making a cupcake thread and I want you to reply in the context you said you wouldn't!

reply

I will personally make ho-themed cupcakes in the adult area as a sign of freedom of speech!

Like Oprahstyle: "you get a ho cupcake and you get a ho cupcake."

reply

You're Right! Now, be an adult, and show us your goods!

shredder from walking dead board?

reply

Yes? Do I know you?

reply

vintageheart.

reply

Lol, yes, I remember you. I always thought you were Klamydia though. That was a long time ago.

reply

Like 4 years ago or something.
She wanted to freak the board out, so she told them she was me. haha. Am I really that freaky???
DON'T ANSWER THAT! > :\
I stopped watching TWD because I had to wake up early then I just never watched it again. So I moved onto the politics board.

I revisited TWD board right before imdb closed down and hans and everyone was there.
They said whenever someone left the board, they called it "vintaghearting" or something.
