Man, like the Golden Globes this year, this last summer had so little movies that actually were worth watching. If there was a movie that you thought was particularly good, let me know. I would be open to inspecting it and participating. Then again, I unplugged cable and probably will not be watching the Oscars.

I will be posting there during the Oscars.

You can expect actors will be whoring for their leftist points during speeches.

reply

I'm not sure the Hollywood elite deserves our attention.

I do dislike celebrity culture, but I also think that if filmmakers make films/shows that we pay to see and that influence our culture, we have the right and even a sort of duty to discuss what we think of their work. And they also should get the benefit of hearing it. Or, at least some possibility of hearing it.

reply

Sure, but I don't think we really need a special Oscar thread for that. We can do it all year long on all the other boards on this website. The Oscars are nothing more but a self-congratulatory ego-fest.

No problem with that, I just felt the need to express my contempt for Hollywood!

Yeah, I relate to what you're saying, Stratego. And yes, that's why I prefer message boards as opposed to other formats for discussing film. It's more conducive to discussions about their actual work than about celebrating them.

OTOH there's an element to saying things "at the right time at the right place with enough people"... But that's something Facebook and Twitter are often better for. Hmm!

Hi 9, I think having a single Live Watch thread would be fun, though! With people in one "room," but either way works!

I don't watch the telecast, though (usually just wait till the next day to see what happened, and look up segments on YouTube). This time I'll keep tabs with the The New York Times website; they usually do live updates.

I'm flexible, 9! If there's no critical mass for the Oscar Live Watch, I'm totally fine with that, too! In fact, it would be pretty funny for the MC reaction to be...

[meh, ego-fest]
[crickets]
9 hours or 9 weeks later
[discussion is on the individual movie/filmmaker boards]

HAHA! I would be perfectly good with that.

Heard today that an "Oscars pre-party" was cancelled in favor of more anti-Trump events led by most Hollywood elites that still can't get over the results of the election. I sometimes wish that they would just keep politics out of award shows like this and focus on the topic at hand....the Oscars! It's started to get really annoying, as it only ruins the mood in my opinion.

reply

Not a big Oscars person, but I think the idea of having a live thread every now and then could be a fun thing for those interested. I don't know what though, because you'd have to find a broad enough subject for enough of us to do that.

Doing them on individual boards, like a live watch, could work better perhaps.

On your wavelength, Dreamers! I was thinking we could do "Flash Mob board parties," just spontaneously whenever we see maybe 2 or 3 other users who might be interested (the more the better of course...) Someone call out a movie title, everybody go to that board and say what they think of it in one thread. Plus maybe a few things: "Favorite scene... favorite performance... favorite line... goofs... moral of the story," etc.

And if someone hasn't seen the movie, it doesn't matter, they can make up an answer. Anyone can come along and call bluff on that person, and if it's true that person was winging it not having seen the film, they have to call the next board party.

Just a thought. We could make our way around the boards pretty quickly that way. :D

reply

That sounds like a really fun and clever idea, bravo! We could just make a thread for a specific movie with subsets of fave scene, line, performance, etc...the ones you mentioned within it.

We could even go around to different boards to do this like Film General, Tv General, 80s or whatever if it happens to fit into that specific time frame or genre. If we could traffic a lot of activity and do it somewhat diversely it might be a really great way to get more posters and more community.

So, bravo to you bravo for that thought ;)
