America's real fight in this century is with China, and except for our insistence that no other country get rich and powerful enough to challenge us, China has not been near the hegemon the US has been.
Ukraine is a stupid diversion that we caused by insisting to pull all of Europe into NATO - against the USSR, which doesn't exist any more.
Yes, what about Putin? But most of Putin's support comes from his standing up to Western NATO expansion and our constant actions to undermine the Russian economy. A catch-22 caused the by the US. The main point of the war in Ukraine is to hobble the Russian economy - not in support of a now non-existent democracy in Ukraine. Putin will be out at some point probably soon, next 10-20 years. It would have been good if the US could have worked with Putin, as he is much smarter than all of our recent Presidents and has been engaged with this for 30+ years. Putin could have been persuaded to sensibly move Russia towards democracy with the right incentives.
John Mearsheimer, who I agree with on Ukraine but disagree with on Palestine, said that Russia is winning and will win the Ukraine war, taking in total 8 Ukrainian oblasts/states, and cutting Ukraine off from the sea, turning it into a useless rump state. As such, Europe and NATO will end up not wanting to even bother with Ukraine.
So effectively was we have done is to drive Russia towards China, destroy Ukraine, hurt Russia a little bit, but end up beefing up their military industrial complex, for the purposes of keeping Europe in our economic sphere. You can argue that either way if you don't care about killing tens of thousands of people and destroying one of the breadbaskets of the world for America's profit.
Republicans Bush and Trump were major actors in this. Bush pushing NATO expansion, and Trump being the first President to ship weapons to Ukraine. Democrats face their share of the blame for doing nothing to stop it or negotiate.
