A question for HarveyManFredSin and any other liberals.

What are some issues you find yourself agreeing with conservatives on? I'll start:

1) Religion (and lack thereof) is a personal freedom.
2) There's nothing offensive about Christmas. (See point 1.)
3) Budgetary deficits are not sustainable in the longterm.
4) The pay gap may not necessarily be due to gender discrimination. (Both Cathy Newman and Jordan Peterson failed to acknowledge that favouritism can be very difficult to identify in a workplace in their televised debate.)
5) Drugs destroy lives.
6) Defence, law enforcement, intelligence and corrections are just as important as health, education and social welfare.
7) Immigration needs to be sustainable. (I don't have a problem with a migrant's nationality, ethnicity or religion, but they should have relevant skills and qualifications that will benefit the country they are migrating to and may help open up business opportunities in their country of origin.)
8) Independent charities can be better at addressing social welfare than government intervention.
9) Regimes that are hostile to the West more often than not, have poor human rights records.
10) Democracy is the worst system of government after all other's. (I'm paraphrasing Churchill here.)

I'm also happy for anyone else to share their views and agree/disagree with my opinions.

reply

I guess I agree with conservatives for the need of good policing. I also agree with the idea of personal freedoms and small government. I think Capitalism and the Free Market is good, but of course like all things there should be moderation.

Agreed. But it's also the best.

Do you ever ask yourself, gee, why do I hate conservatives? Who wants me to hate conservatives and why? Who’s sponsoring their actor mouthpieces on hate night tv and at abcnnbcbs?

reply

I'm not American, so not a liberal or republican (or whatever the other one is), but I agree and disagree to an extent on these.

1. Yes religion is a personal freedom, but it's not an excuse for bigotry or a shield against the consequences of being openly hateful
2. Agree about Christmas - loads of people celebrate Christmas without any connection to religion, it's just an attractive capitalist holiday for many
3. Idk
4. It may be, though, and also it probably is given centuries of sexism in the workforce
5. Agree
6. Disagree, education, social welfare and health are imo at the top of a society's priorities or at least they should be. I'm not saying defense is unimportant, just that it ranks lower imo
7. Almost everyone who is currently a resident of a western country is the offspring of an immigrant, immigration is sustainable. Otherwise, everyone needs to be evacuated, not just recent immigrants
8. Disagree, if the government can bail out millionaires, they can intervene on behalf of the poor too
9. I think Indonesia is the country most at odds with Australia, and yeah they don't have a good track record when it comes to human rights, so you might be onto something
10. Disagree, there's worse

reply

Thanks for your response. IMO regarding 8, I am definitely against corporate bailouts even if it means (regrettably) average employees being retrenched and smaller shareholders losing their life savings. However, in relation to not-for-profits, I think their work could be more targeted and better meets the needs of the disadvantaged.

reply

You're welcome, it's an interesting discussion.

To add to point 8, average employees being retrenched and smaller shareholders losing their life savings is happening with bailouts, so I don't see any correlation between those things.

But I do agree that the help doled out by charities could probably be better assigned. However, I don't think it's possible for charities to achieve anything without government assistance because the people who can afford to be charitable don't want to help poor people. From my understanding, a lot of charities subsist off of donations made by people who can barely afford to make them, not the wealthy. Not to mention that charities are running on the same government funding they received probably 30 or more years ago, but have a substantially higher quota of people in need of their help, which is the main reason they aren't able to meet most people's needs - so giving them less government assistance is a bad idea imo
